Summary

As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowing together to reveal what it means to see humans as "the younger brothers of creation". As she explores these themes, she circles toward a central argument: The awakening of a wider ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgement and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the world. Once we begin to listen for the languages of other beings, we can begin to understand the innumerable life-giving gifts the world provides us and learn to offer our thanks, our care, and our own gifts in return.

Profoundly Important

This should be a school text for all children to see a different way. Thank you Robin.

A beautiful listen, full of wisdom. I would recommend reading this book. The old ways are disappearing, here why it matters

A beautiful, thought-provoking book

This has become one of my favourite books. It brings together seriously impressive knowledge of plants with a world-view changing ability to bring to life the indigenous American relationship with the plant world which we have turned our backs on, but which we urgently need to find our way back to. This recording is beautifully narrated by the author herself - there is something very special about somebody telling you their own story in such detail. I bought it about four months ago, have listened to the whole thing twice (and parts of it several times) and not a day goes by when I don't think about something the book has taught me to remember or think differently about.

A phenomenon

What an inspiring listen this is, a life-changer, and beautifully read. I’m concurrently reading it as it deserves to be taken in by every sense

Thank you for sharing your gifts

Packed with beautiful, thought-provoking stories. I learned much about plants, ecosystems, culture, history and what I can give to the world. I cried, I laughed and I started building community.

The narration is quite slow, I enjoyed it at 1.5x speed.

I love this book

I have been so moved by this book. The passion, wisdom, scholarship and storytelling came together perfectly. And I much appreciated hearing the author reading her own words. I have already recommended this book widely and ordered a paper copy for citations in my own work. Magnificent.

So beautiful and awoke an awareness!!

I LOVED this book. I learned a lot from it as she told her story and the story of the earth. I never know that nature is so giving and generous and caring and yet now it seems so obvious!! It has really changed my approach to do something to help the earth, I know now that any small thing I can do is one step closer. the idea of Reciprocity woven through this book has made me begin to see it in all aspects of my life and to want it. To want to live in a world where we are all living in love, gratitude and reciprocity. This is not a textbook but it gives a beautiful basis of understanding that amazing processes occur throughout nature, often completely invisible to the human eye and that we are only beginning to understand it all. it showed me how interlinked it all is and how....whole. I particularly enjoyed the trip to the walmarsh!!!
