Editor reviews

The fascinating subject of Philosophy is revealed in A Little History of Philosophy, written by British philosopher and best-selling author Nigel Warburton with an audiobook narration by Kris Dyer. Taking listeners all the way back to the philosophers of ancient Greece and working his way through the most notable philosophers in history, hear the fascinating topics that have been discussed over the course of time and see the parallels between them – for at its core, philosophy is an attempt to answer those fundamental questions - who are we? Why are we here? Who or what created us? Available now from Audible.

Summary

Philosophy begins with questions about the nature of reality and how we should live. These were the concerns of Socrates, who spent his days in the ancient Athenian marketplace asking awkward questions, disconcerting the people he met by showing them how little they genuinely understood.

This engaging book introduces the great thinkers in Western philosophy and explores their most compelling ideas about the world and how best to live in it. In forty brief chapters, Nigel Warburton guides us on a chronological tour of the major ideas in the history of philosophy. He provides interesting and often quirky stories of the lives and deaths of thought-provoking philosophers from Socrates, who chose to die by hemlock poisoning rather than live on without the freedom to think for himself, to Peter Singer, who asks the disquieting philosophical and ethical questions that haunt our own times.

Warburton not only makes philosophy accessible, he offers inspiration to think, argue, reason, and ask in the tradition of Socrates. A Little History of Philosophy presents the grand sweep of humanity's search for philosophical understanding and invites all to join in the discussion.

Philosophy Bites

Loved it. Not too heavy going for the person in the street (me). The author also does the excellent philosophy bites podcast. Recommended.

Excellent and smooth taster to get you hooked.

As someone who would like to know a little more about philosophy, I have bought a few audiobooks to get me started. The lecture based ones are so dry and others either text books or so vague. This was perfect. A steady timeline featuring the big names of philosophy with their views and how they shaped the world. Excellent. Just about to start it again in case I missed anything.

Unexciting yet Perfect

Not the most groundbreaking book I've ever read, but does exactly what it says in the tin! The short snippets through time show the development of philosophical ideas. With each chapter linking into the next, this book tells a story while also presenting the facts. It's a great starting point for someone new to philosophy (like me) and provides an easy platform to jump off into interesting areas.

Concise and interesting!

A neat history of philosophy throughout history from Socrates to Singer. Easy to go back to specific chapters when necessary without need to listen to the whole thing.

A good gateway into the world of philosophy for newbies!

A Little History of *Western* Philosophy

A comprehensive introduction to a huge subject. But doesn't include Eastern philosophers.
Narration was clear and good, though there were a couple of moments where I found the style a bit irritating - personal preference really.

C3-PO gives an intro to Philosophy!

Found this quite interesting and a decent introduction into the basics of what philosophers do and are, although unable to digest in large chunks, as so much to take in and think about... being read to by C3-PO was nice too;-)

Great intro to philosophy

Very nice booked and well narrated except for the occasional, comedic, impression. I would recommend as a good intro to philosophy.
