Summary

Marc Seidman's idyllic world is brutally ripped apart when he is gunned down in his home. Twelve days later he wakes up in hospital to learn that his wife is dead and his baby daughter Tara is missing. A ransom demand is made and agreed to. But something goes terribly wrong. The kidnappers escape, and Marc remembers the ransom note's ominous warning: there will be no second chance.

An agonising eighteen months pass with no word. And then, as Marc has just about given up all hope of seeing his daughter again, a package arrives with a note attached: want a second chance?

The note is chilling, but Marc sees only one thing: the chance to save his daughter. And, haunted by deception and deadly secrets - about his wife, about an old love, and about his own past - he vows to bring Tara home...at any cost.

The voice sounded robotic

The story was ok. I think it was a tad over complicated. Not the best Harlan Coben. Perhaps a little too drawn out.

The reader had very strange manerisms. and sounded a bit odd at time. Otherwise very enjoyable

Struggled to get into it

I usually love Harlan Coben, I’ve read or listened to loads now. But I really struggled getting into this one- it took a good few hours! I think I struggled most with the narrating- it was very robotic and not the best I’ve heard. Story in the end was ok and typical Harlan Coben, but the narrating did affect the overall enjoyment.

Hmmm

Firstly, I thought this was a new book, its actually quite old.

Secondly, the narrators voice wasn't right for the character.
I'm not sure if his voice sounded older or it was because it needed more authority.

However I did enjoy the story, my only criticism is that it needed a bit more oomph, but that could be down to the narration.

Terrible narration

As usual Harlan Coben delivers a story with clever twists and turns but it’s spoiled by the awful narration. The protagonist is a middle aged man yet the narrator is clearly elderly.
The intonation is absent, it’s void of emotion and flat. Such a shame.

Good

Another good one by Harlan Coben lots of twists. Struggled with the voice though at times after reading in robot tone he seemed to forget to change back and spoke like it when he didn’t need to

Classic Coben - but from 2003

I was expecting a brand new book, but this was from 2003. I don’t recall reading it back then though, so I didn’t mind, but just wanted to make others aware. It’s the usual HC twists and turns. The only thing that was a bit off was the narrator really didn’t sound like a 36 year old doctor. He sounded more like a 50 year old blue collar New Jersey guy to me. But it wasn’t too distracting. Would still recommend

one fantastic book

This book is really hard to put down I had to binge listen to it. It could have ended so many times, but there are twists and turns everywhere.
I strongly recommend this book which in my opinion is one of Harlan's best.
Feel lost now as I mourn the end of listening this book. Enjoy

Good story but…

I’ve now listened to several Harlan Coben books and find the stories addictive in the best way. So, when this popped up as a new release I didn’t hesitate. However, whist the story is still good, I didn’t find it quite as layered and intricate as others. It also isn’t helped by some very wooden narration.

So, a small watch-out but overall still worth a listen.

did not expect the ending at all

The voice was a little robotic at times, but ok when you get used to it.
