a stunning sequel

It's not often a second book lives up to the first, but in this case I think it's safe to say it does. It builds on the characters of Stella and David from the first book and explores in much more depth their budding relationship and development of their trust in each other.

Stella no longer feels totally alone after the loss of her coven, with the help of David she finds purpose in again carrying out her covens duty of protecting London from its uncanny inhabitants. Things get personal for Stella when Davids niece is taken by a mysterious sleep monster who has been stalking the local children's wards and trapping kids in their own nightmares. Stella faces her own heartbreak and inability to save someone in order to rescue not only David's niece but all of the kids the monster has trapped within his dream realm.

The monsters in this book are especially creepy, the 'best fiend' that impersonates a family dog and feeds on the misery of the family as they destroy themselves, things that watch and listen from the shadows that you can never get a true look at, that are just fleeting shadows you glimpse from the corner of your eye but are gone when you attempt to focus on them, and then there is the nightmare dream monster, who finds the thing that haunts you the most and traps you within your own dream hell loop, impossible to break put of, while the body sleeps.

Even with the haunting, creepiness of the story the same sense of humour is carried through, especially David, who is such a warm soul, you can't help but being drawn to him and enjoying his story. Stella is the same sassy, strong, driven woman from the first book, but with a renewed purpose there is something so much more human about her and despite her insistence that she was nothing but a tool for her coven to use, a weapon they wielded against the darker side of the uncanny, she proves time and time again she has the kindest, most human of hearts and it is really lovely to see.

I enjoyed Jakes cameo too, Jake is the main protagonist of the Spectral Detective series that is another uncanny London series I highly recommend.

Once again Heather Tracey is the perfect narrator to give a voice to Stella, she brings heart and warmth to the character as well as strength and wit. Her characterisation of the monsters is great, the nightmare monster really unnerved me. It was a joy to listen to.

Getting better and better

Stella is such a lovely character. Her heartache of losing her coven, her pain and her sorrow is evident.

The author has such a way with words, even though the story itself is dark and twisted, we still find humor.

I love David as a character, more even than Stella itself, but I must say his backstory is lacking, his motivations and everything. I would love to know more of him, the way he is in this installment, I thought of him more like comic relief.

The brief appearance of Jake was amazing!

Enjoyable.

Nightmare Realm tells of quite a chilling mystery for Stella Familiar and her detective sidekick to get their teeth into this time. Again the book is made all the more enjoyable by the excellent narration of Heather Tracy. Heading for book 3 right away!

Will keep you up all night

I really enjoyed the first book in the series, so as soon as I finished that one I was straight onto this book. This book was just as good and guess what I will be listening to next. You don't need to listen to the books in order as they could be stand alone books but with the ending of this book (hmm not quiet a cliff hanger but the introduction to next plot of book 3) I highly recommend that you do. The characters are great and I still love David's bravado in the face of danger and I liked the fact that we learnt a little bit more about the characters. The plot kind of reminded me of nightmare on elm street. where people (or In this case children) got attacked in there sleep but this is way better. I am more of a mystery fan but this series as captured my imagination as Stella and David run there investigations into who or what is causing the children to stay asleep.
Stella, a witches familiar is the only one left in her coven alive and the only protection London has against monsters. So when the children of London start to go to bed and then never wake up it is up to her to find the reason behind the super natural mystery. Police detective David is willing to help especially when his own niece is afraid to go to sleep. A school yard dare leads children to say the rhyme that summons the monster in there sleep. Can Stella and David find out the reason behind the creation of monster in order to stop it. They witches of London managed to stop it before now it's Stellas turn.
I like the narrator and thought she did an excellent job with the voices, she had a way of making the come alive.

Recommended

I very much enjoyed this second book in the series. The narrator, Heather Tracy, does a fantastic job of the general storytelling, and the many character voices. She really draws you into the story, adding a whole new dimension to what is already an intriguing tale. If you enjoy action-packed urban fantasy, I recommend checking this out.

An Uncanny Kingdom Urban Fantasy

Loved the first book and the next one in the series does not disappoint. Stella has to defeat the evil that preys on the children of London. I loved this one more then the first because it reminds me of the pied piper. I have not come across books with this concept.
I am looking forward to the third book in the series.
