Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. Summary
A boy is imprisoned by a witch and must tell her a new scary story each night to stay alive. This thrilling contemporary fantasy from J. A. White, the acclaimed author of the Thickety series, brings to life the magic and craft of storytelling.
Alex’s original hair-raising tales are the only thing keeping the witch Natacha happy, but soon he’ll run out of pages to read from and be trapped forever. He’s loved scary stories his whole life, and he knows most don’t have a happily ever after. Now that Alex is trapped in a true terrifying tale, he’s desperate for a different ending - and a way out of this twisted place.
This modern spin on the Scheherazade story is perfect for fans of Coraline and A Tale Dark and Grimm. With interwoven tips on writing with suspense, adding in plot twists, hooks, interior logic, and dealing with writer’s block, this is the ideal audiobook for budding writers and all fans of delightfully just-dark-enough tales.

This Book Brought Back My Childhood!
I grew up on R.L. Stine's "Goosebumps," and the Nickelodeon show, "Are You Afraid of the Dark." This book is like the best episode of either. Intensely original, with great pacing and lovable characters, this is a world I look forward to revisiting again!

Just the right amount of creepy
I really enjoyed the shorter horror stories that Alex wrote and I wish there had been more of them. The actual story sucked me in in the beginning, but lost steam about halfway through. The end really picked up again though and I found myself back on the edge of my seat. A really fun story, even in scary stuff isn't really your thing.

Narrator made this book so much better!!!
So the story was great! It was scary but like elementary school scary. But the narrator Kirby Heyborne made this audible version so much better! His witch voice scared me!!!!! His shrill yell was too good! The story is clever and as a librarian I cant wait to read it aloud to 5th-6th graders. They will love it!
