Summary

With a culture dating back to at least 700 B.C., West Africa has a long and rich history. British influence after the 16th century, and especially in the 18th century, changed the region's course. By 1967, Nigeria was at war with itself, with the "Republic of Biafra" produced in Nigeria's eastern region. Over a million people perished. This is the story of Nigeria's struggle, which typifies the history and outlook of the West African region.

The World's Political Hot Spots series explains the basis of conflicts in some of the world's most politically sensitive areas. Many of these regions are in today's headlines, and tensions recently have become violent in virtually all of them. Each presentation covers up to 10 centuries of background, revealing how and why today's problems occur.

interesting brief on the area

a gpod as anywhere start to understanding this region. pressed in an interesting manner but equally lacks perhaps the details that a student of history would be hungry to absorb.

Good Starting Point

Would you consider the audio edition of Nigeria and West Africa to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version

What was one of the most memorable moments of Nigeria and West Africa?

One of the most intriguing areas was hearing about the arrival of the 1st Europeans to Africa, and the later rush for Africa by Europe.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The rush and rise of Africa

Interesting but out of date.

This book starts way back in the beginning, talking about the early history of the area and the rock carvings and archeological impacts in the area. It slowly moves up through history sharing both oral and written sources and talking about the West’s interactions with the area and how they slowly increased. The book did have a heavy Western orientation as a lot of what it covered and discussed was the West’s meddling in Nigeria and the perspective of the Europeans.Overall this was an interesting book that covered a lot of history, but it was very dated. It was originally written and copyrighted in 1992, and is in desperate need of an update.

Nigeria in view

Perfect account of the Nation Nigeria. Perfect narration, however, audio captions should be real voices.

Educational

Learned a great deal of history. I like the evolution that the narrator took to detail Nigeria's growth.
