Most relevant
might be too psychologically detailed for modern readers but I love the depth of the 19th century novel. George Gissing clearly understood well the literary world which he portrayed. the rich and variable tones of the narrator were completely perfect for the story.

I can’t believe l stuck with this story , it was very depressing and had no morally justified ending. I don’t think l will read any more George Gissing

A great story, bringing to life the various characters fighting to survive, or thrive, in writing and publishing in the 19th Century. the reader voiced the characters with compassion and humour.

The heavily mannered and stilted narration made listening hard work. I'm not sure if Gissing meant to make all his characters quite so unsympathetic but the often sneering voices they are given by the narrator offers little relief from the portrayal of the insidious effects of poverty.
