A penniless Corsican outsider crowned himself Emperor of France—then set the entire continent ablaze to keep that crown.

How does an obscure artillery officer with no fortune, no royal blood, and a thick foreign accent claw his way to the most powerful throne in Europe? And what does it cost a man to burn Moscow to the ground, march half a million soldiers to their deaths in the snow, and still believe himself the chosen instrument of destiny?

This is the true story of Napoleon Bonaparte, told with cinematic urgency and unflinching detail—from a struggling Corsican family to the battlefields that redrew the map of Europe, from the throne room of Paris to the frozen retreat from Russia, and finally to a damp, rat-infested farmhouse on a remote South Atlantic rock. Dominic Haynes strips away two centuries of myth to reveal the calculating genius, the ruthless ambition, and the fatal flaws that built an empire—and destroyed it.

Inside, you'll discover:

  • How a nobody from Ajaccio outmaneuvered kings, generals, and revolutions to seize absolute power
  • The battlefield innovations that made his armies unstoppable across Europe
  • The catastrophic miscalculations—Moscow, the Hundred Days, Waterloo—that unraveled everything he built
  • His final campaign: dictating his own legend from exile, transforming defeat into martyrdom

You think you know Napoleon. You don't know the man behind the myth—the outsider, the tyrant, the prisoner writing his own resurrection.

The narrator gives Napoleon’s early victories a quick, almost breathless energy, then changes pace when the consequences begin to pile up. I especially liked the quieter delivery around the retreat from Russia, where the pauses make the cold and exhaustion feel heavier than a list of casualties could.
The performance also keeps the political sections easy to follow. There were a few moments when I wanted more room around certain events, but the narration kept me engaged and made long stretches of history feel surprisingly close.

I knew I was hooked when a political meeting suddenly felt as tense as a battlefield. The narrator makes Napoleon’s rise feel immediate, and I kept listening to see how far this driven outsider would push his luck.

I thought the final stretch would be an afterthought. It wasn't.

Napoleon on the island, surrounded by damp walls, bad food, and his own version of events, was the part I kept replaying in my head. The battles explain his power, but exile explains the man. He loses the empire and starts building a legend instead. That turn felt almost more dangerous than another victory.

The writing has a clean, fast-moving style that suits Napoleon’s life. Short bursts of action sit beside colder, more reflective passages, so the book never feels like a dry list of campaigns. I liked the plain word choices, especially when the story turns from military success to vanity, impatience, & bad judgment. The author doesn’t spend too long admiring the legend before showing the damage behind it.

A few sections move quickly through complicated events, & I sometimes wanted more room around them. Still, the overall shape is strong, & the prose kept me listening.

What stayed with me was the way Napoleon keeps turning every success into a larger risk. His rise is fascinating, but the book also shows how quickly confidence becomes entitlement, especially once he starts treating armies and countries as pieces on his personal board.

The final chapters in exile were unexpectedly compelling. Hearing him shape the story of his own life made me think about how much of the Napoleon we remember was built after the victories were already gone. The account moves quickly and sometimes skims over smaller details, but it held my attention throughout.
