Summary

Welcome to the hilarious, strange, elegiac, outrageous world of David Sedaris. In Naked, Sedaris turns the current mania for the memoir on its proverbial ear, mining the exceedingly rich terrain of his life, his family, and his unique worldview, a sensibility at once take-no-prisoners sharp and deeply charitable. A tart-tongued mother does dead-on imitations of her young son's nervous tics, to the great amusement of his teachers; a stint of Kerouackian wandering is undertaken (of course!) with a quadriplegic companion. Through it all is Sedaris' unmistakable voice, without a doubt one of the freshest in American writing.

Critic reviews

"Sidesplitting." ( The New York Times Book Review)
"Genuinely funny, at times hilarious....Makes for a smashing use of audio as a unique entertainment medium....Highly likable and spirited throughout...makes a case for audio as its own special form." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Sedaris is a gifted satirist with an uncanny knack for re-creating dialogue and revealing fantasies....Brutally honest and brilliantly eloquent, Sedaris is positively tonic." ( Booklist)

Listening pleasure

I downloaded Naked after listening to David Sedaris on BBC Radio 4. This is an exellent audio book and made what is normally a monotonous commute to work highly enjoyable. I caught myself chuckling away on the bus many times.

So funny

Lots of laugh out loud moments, especially the infamous poop towel and all the impressions by Amy. Vintage Sedaris.

Laugh at loud

This book grew on me massively as I progressed through it. Initially it seems like the diary of an autistic person. As David gets older his neurosis seem more neurotypical but become atypical with hilarious and sometimes poignant vignettes of a person who is fully at ease with the oddities of everyday life and family life. It is laugh out loud funny and highly recommended.

Classic

Candid, delightful and timeless. I’ve listened to this many times and enjoy it just as much if not more each time.

Even better in audio

I had read 'Holidays on Ice' and 'Dress your family...' and thought them tremendously funny and clever. However, hearing the author (and his sister) adds a whole new dimension to his writing. In fact, I think I'll be getting the audio versions the books I've already read. Sad, funny, mordant and completely unique.

So good I need to listen to his entire back catalogue now.

After recently reading Calypso, I decided to revisit some of my favourite Sedaris essays and stories. Audio books are ideal for this task and I find his voice peculiarly soothing. Naked, to me, is in equal parts hilarious and melancholy and I adored revisiting this book whilst walking and tidying and going about my day. On to the next one.

Sad, funny, brilliant

This is the first time I have 'read'/listened to David Sedaris and it won't be the last. He is superbly and gut-wrenchingly sad, funny and brilliant in his observations about the everyday weirdness of life - his own and his family's. Listening was like therapy - I see my own family's weirdness in an entirely new light!

Hyper real and hysterical

Stringently contained drama, intimately open with shocking attention to detail. Conveys a kind of lateral compassion than impacts humane and humorous and is ultimately liberating to engage with. Fantastic writing.
