I romanen av Nordhoff & Hall följer vi den fiktiva jag-berättaren Roger Byam (baserad på Peter Heywood), som är en ung kadett, som följer med på Bountys seglats mot Tahiti, där han ska samla information om de inföddas språk. Genom Byam får vi höra om kapten Blighs orättfärdiga behandling av sitt manskap, om myteriet och om hans eget och andra av besättningsmedlemmarnas efterföljande dramatiska öden. Myteriet på Bounty har filmatiserats flera gånger, bland annat 1962 med Marlon Brandon i rollen som Fletcher Christian.
