About this listen

"Achingly funny" - Libby Purves

On the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, Iestyn Edwards, bass baritone, boarded the HMS Victory to sing at a naval supper in the presence of Her Majesty.

Stacks, Royal Marines commando, was there on duty. He was also on duty when Iestyn turned up in the middle of the Iraq war on a Combined Services Entertainment tour, this time in a tutu....

Despite trying to dry his ballet tights on the anti-blast wall, singing from a tank turret and confiscating the president of Estonia’s custard creams, the most unlikely friendship was formed.

They even invited him back....

Charm, wit, intelligence and brilliant 'idiosyncratic' narration - absolutely loved every minute of the journey!

Hilarious blend of showbiz, war and friendship

I had the great pleasure of meeting Iestyn recently after his horrendous across country trip from Norfolk to Shropshire. Despite his journey he was adorable, lively and engaging and this book is the same

Loved this

I had the good fortune to meet Iestyn the week before Remembrance Sunday, when he performed at our village hall. I cried when he told his story, particularly where Stacks gets injured. I ended up on stage with Madame Galina as part of the performance and laughed like a drain all evening. As a Veteran so much of the book resonates with me, particularly the humour. If you aren’t ex military, you might not get it, but I loved it. I also loved the audible presentation, the ad libbing, the slightly loose narration. It makes it sound as if he is speaking directly to you. A great read of a very personal story. Thanks Iestyn, it was a pleasure to meet you.

Hearing the author deliver his own work, in his own voice, is brilliant. Great banter with the soldiers. Charming British campery at its best. I’ve seen his live show and he is hilarious.

Fabulously funny
