A darkly comic and bitingly subversive take on life, love, race and family, Queenie will have you nodding in recognition, crying in solidarity and rooting for this unforgettable character every step of the way. Story
When Emira is apprehended at a supermarket for ‘kidnapping’ the white child she’s actually babysitting, it sets off an explosive chain of events. Her employer Alix, a feminist blogger with the best of intentions, resolves to make things right. But Emira herself is aimless, broke and wary of Alix’s desire to help. Story
Everyone has a Tully Dawson: the friend who defines your life. In the summer of 1986, in a small Scottish town, James and Tully ignite a brilliant friendship based on music, films and the rebel spirit. With school over and the locked world of their fathers before them, they rush towards the climax of their youth: a magical weekend in Manchester, the epicentre of everything that inspires them in working-class Britain. There, against the greatest soundtrack ever recorded, a vow is made: to go at life differently. Thirty years on, half a life away, the phone rings. Tully has news.

Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

The brilliant new novel from the author of the New York Times best seller Everything I Never Told You. In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is meticulously planned - from the layout of the winding roads to the colours of the houses to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead.

Summary
Nominated for the Booker Prize 2019.
Shortlisted for the 2019 Women’s Prize for Fiction.
Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favourite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola's third boyfriend in a row is dead.
Korede's practicality is the sisters' saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures of her dinner to Instagram when she should be mourning her 'missing' boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit.
A kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where Korede works is the bright spot in her life. She dreams of the day when he will realise they're perfect for each other. But one day Ayoola shows up to the hospital uninvited and he takes notice. When he asks Korede for Ayoola's phone number, she must reckon with what her sister has become and what she will do about it. Sharp as nails and full of deadpan wit, Oyinkan Braithwaite has written a deliciously deadly debut that's as fun as it is frightening.

Come for the killing, stay for the people
My Sister is a snack-sized novella following Korede, a nurse who works in Laos and provides for her sister and widowed mother.
The book is easy to read. Most chapters fit on a page or two, and Korede uses compact, matter-of-fact language. Sometimes that compactness produces cutting comments or deadpan humour, but in general it's played straight, reflecting Korede's dutiful and restrained approach to life in general.
The title and opening are sensational, but this isn't a thriller: it's a character study.
If you'd like to get under the skin of a meticulous, dutiful, tired Nigerian woman as she does her level best to carve out a life for herself and her family - despite shallow men, corrupt traffic cops, and her frustratingly carefree sister - you'll find a lot to love.
PS - because of the short chapters, I preferred the printed book to the audiobook, but they're both good. The narrator uses a quiet, unadorned voice which fits well with Korede's character.
I enjoyed the snatches of poetry :)

Terrific Story-Telling
I was bowled over by this book. Not by the murders, but by the relationship between two sisters, and the gradual revelation of their family background. By the last lines you understand why the long-suffering Korede cleans up, time and again, after her spoilt, self-centred, knife-toting younger sibling.

Loved this book, it’s not just a story about a serial killer, it’s a story about power and the affects it has within the family. It was interesting to hear about the culture and I loved the incorporation of social media. Very modern with classic themes. The narration was fantastic, I will definitely look out for this author and narrator combination.

Entertaining enough; not outstanding
One of this years booker longlist reads.
A unique story approach and perhaps that is why it is longlisted.
The story is entertaining but it’s not a thriller read; no where near. This is a world where having a sister as a serial killer is treated as either the norm, or dismissed as impossible, or where backs are turned.
It’s a fun listen and the presentation is perfect. Worth a read; just don’t expect to be blown away by this one!

Very good read
I love a unique story that breaks the norm and this book and its Lagos setting is definitely that. Beautiful narration. The emotions of the main character all come through in this story..loneliness, jealousy , loyalty, passion and you can feel her sheer exhaustion of dealing with it all.

A wonderful look into Nigerian life
Of course the most captivating part of this story is the relationship between sisters; one murderous, the other somewhat innocent but I really enjoyed the look into Nigerian life alongside all of this - the commentary on class, religion, cuisine, fashion, work etc. Wonderful book

Quicky and Enjoyable
My Sister, the Serial Killer is set in present day Lagos, painting a background of an ordinary hardworking woman, living an ordinary middle class life.
The plot however is not ordinary, and delivers everything the title promises (there is a sister and she is a serial killer). The writing is sharp and entertaining with interesting characters. The pacing is brisk, with exposition flowing naturally into the main tale. Together, all this makes for the kind of book that is easy to get lost in and finish in one sitting.
Weruche Opia's narration felt very natural and easy to listen to. However, there were moments where probably different takes were used, and there was a marked difference in vocal quality which would momentarily pull me out of the story. However, the story kept drawing me back in.
Would recommend for anyone who wants an African story that is not the usual "village girl/boy moves to city and learns a lesson" narrative.

As an African, although not Nigerian, I could relate to some of the African elements, and none of the Nigerian specific ones, and it does NOT matter. It is a really enjoyable story, with an unparalleled narrator. I recommend this book to all!
