Summary

England is under threat from Napoleon, but it doesn't affect those in high society, or does it? Charles Baker, the young Baron Glazebrook, has happily fallen under the spell of a man of dubious character. He is rampaging over London, enjoying everything that a young man with a fortune could wish for. Clara Baker is compelled to try and protect her brother, no matter what the cost is to herself or her reputation. She made a promise to her dying mother and nothing is going to divert her from her mission. Edmund Ainscough, Earl of Chertsey, is a man with a reputation. His welcome in the seedier side of society makes him the perfect target for those in authority who want to know who is loyal to the king. Three people thrown together find their worlds, values and feelings can all be changed in an instant. All will face their deepest fears in this novel of love and betrayal.

I Spy a great story

I'm suitably impressed by this author's skill in weaving a tale which is quite believable and all the while the reader is kept entertained and amused and almost participating.
I loved the potentially compromising situation that Clara puts herself into when looking for her brother Charles. And along comes Edmund, the Spy and a Rake, to save the damsel in distress. And the story takes off from there and continues on its merry way all the way to the end.
This is one of those stories that one wishes didn't have to end!
Brilliant narration by Melanie Fraser. So much so that while listening I totally forgot that it was only done by only one person.
I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator. This is my unbiased review.

Enjoyable

I had already read this book but thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. The story is gripping but the reader lacked variation in her voice .

What sort of spy is he?

The narrator had very poor material so the mistake can be forgiven. The hero is a layabout/rake Lord, that hangs about in the right environment to pick up gossip, and that by accident. The heroine's characters is unbelievable, in the effort to protect her brother, she is willing to break all the rules of society, betray her country, jeopardise her life and that of her brother she is protecting. Thank God, England was not dependent on such "losers".

Loved it.

If you could sum up My Lord the Spy in three words, what would they be?

Charming, funny and romantic.

What was one of the most memorable moments of My Lord the Spy?

My Lord the Spy is a charming, traditional regency romance. It has a real feel good feeling which made it a perfect reading choice to cosy up with on a cold, dreary day.
The story has everything that I associate with the genre; lighthearted banter, spies and smugglers, humour and romance. Best of all, it had a little bit of suspense which made it an exciting read as well. I was happy to spend all day listening to this book.

I was also happy to note that this is a clean regency romance; they are in short supply. And I am delighted to have found a new author to recommend to a much loved aunt.

Have you listened to any of Melanie Fraser’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have listened to many of Melanie Fraser's performances. I've enjoyed them all and as a favourite narrator I knew that I wouldn't be disappointed with her performance of a regency romance. I think this is one of my favourites, probably because I love the genre and her narration of My Lord the Spy complemented it so well. Her polished accent and lovely diction really enhanced the story as her narration adds an air of authenticity to the characters and the time period they live in. This is something that narrators who perform with an American or regional accent just can't offer.

There were quite a few different male and female characters to perform in this book and they were each done incredibly well. Each voice seemed to match them perfectly. Clara's in particular reflected her youth and sweet nature. Edmund's was suitably masculine and older than Clara's brother, Charles.

I enjoyed the sprinkling of sound effects. They added to the ambience of the scenes without being a distraction. My favourite was the background sounds on the beach during the smuggling activity and the scenes in the cave.

I'm looking forward to reading Henry and Millie's story in the next book.

Any additional comments?

Fun Regency Spy Romance :-)

I enjoy Regency Romances and love them even more with some adventure so this one fit the bill. This is a relatively clean romance that has intrigue, suspense and action along with memorable characters. Since this is a new author for me, I was so pleased that this story was written quite well and also had wonderful regency style narration. I will be sure to check out the other books this author has available. I was voluntarily provided a copy of this book and would like to thank the author, narrator, or publisher for the opportunity to review.

A nice historical romance

What did you like best about this story?

I have always been fond of Lords who are spies. I also liked how the MC Clara was more afraid of her brother's reputation than her own. She was looking out for him.

Have you listened to any of Melanie Fraser’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first time listening to Melanie Fraser and I thought she did a really good job with this book. She tried hard with her male voices and they were not bad. I would listen to her again.

If you could take any character from My Lord the Spy out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Well, Edmund of course, who wouldn't want to dine with a handsome Lord who is a spy! ;)

Any additional comments?

This is a short historical listen with an entertaining story. I really liked Clara and Edmund. If you like historicals you might enjoy this one. I liked how the audio used some effects in it like you could hear the ocean and seagulls, but it wasn't to over done that it took you out of the story.

Sweet story

I have enjoyed regency stories from time to time. I thought the author did a good job describing what I imagine were the way things were. I found this story to be a nice diversion. I thought the narrator did a good job. The story is relatively clean and I'd rate it at PG. Melodrama

The voices were fine but the dialogue and pacing were awful. First book I think the audio version is better than the written.

Horrible Narrator

I tried to finish the book but with little more than an hour left, finally gave up. The narrator was extremely annoying, using a sickly sweet voice one might use when reading to a toddler. I inwardly cringed every time a character “laughed” because she would add a fake laugh after. I rated the story two stars, giving it the benefit of doubt that it might not be as simple and childish as the narrator made it seem. I enjoyed ‘The Captain’s Wallflower’ and kept hoping this book would become half as good as that one. Do not waste a credit on this book.

Narrator’s interpretation left a lot to be desired.

The narrator made the characters sound like small children. It was annoying. It made me roll my eyes.

Nice Regency Romance

Any additional comments?

This was a nice story and I enjoyed the occasional background sounds (birds tweeting, horse hooves on the road, etc.). They were subtle enough not to distract from the narration and were a great addition. Attitudes of people in this era were so different from what we would consider to be contemporary sensibilities. The narrator was engaging and enhanced the story. I enjoyed this audiobook and I would recommend it for listeners of Regency Romance.

A Suspenseful Clean Romance

This is an entertaining story with plenty of suspense and intrigue. The characters were well developed and the period accurate. This was a fun story to listen to with good clean romance.
