About this listen

Temp Jobs Can Be Murder!

Scarlett Chase’s newest temp job is working for a multi-generational family during their week-long stay at a large cabin in the beautiful mountains. She gets to use the skills she gained while earning her CNA as she takes care of a teenage girl with a full-leg cast and the family’s aging grandfather while the rest of the group hits the ski slopes.

All plans for outdoor winter fun slip away like a novice skier down a black diamond slope when a massive snowstorm traps everyone inside the isolated cabin. With plenty of food and a stable power source, no one worries about anything other than boredom. But then a string of unusual occurrences changes everything. The Wi-Fi inexplicably goes down. The grandfather begins to act irrationally. And a stranger shows up at their door, begging for shelter from the storm.

When Scarlett finds one of the cabin occupants dead, some inconsistencies make her suspect murder. But if that is true, it means the murderer is one of the people trapped in the cabin by the snowstorm.

Can Scarlett convince the others that one of them is a killer? And if she tries but isn’t successful, will the murderer try to silence her? Will the storm ease up and the snowplows arrive before the murderer can strike again?

Murder—unlike her job—isn’t temporary.

Murder in the Mountains is the seventh book in the fun and clever Temp Jobs Cozy Mystery Series.

Oh so good. I love when mother nature plays havoc in a book, it makes the story so much more dramatic being stuck with a killer and not knowing who it is. I think it is one of the better ones I have read or listened too, as it contained a number of twists. I actually think the author was picturing this playing out on the big screen rather than pages of a book, it is that tight with drama, suspense, twists, clues and surprises. I loved every minute. I really like Scarlett's temp jobs because it gives the author a big scope for her to find herself in new situations and with different people, keeping the series fresh and exciting. This does mean most of the characters are new to us and there are only a few characters who are regulars to play her sidekicks but it is written is a way that despite meeting lots of new characters all at the same time it feels like it's part of the unfolding story and doesn't need to be hurried up to get on with the mystery. Just a well written entertaining story (like the rest of the books in the series) and the reason the author is one of my favourites. I can't wait for the next book.

Scarlett's latest job has her joining a family on a skiing holiday. While the rest of family, which also includes her brother and his girlfriend, are out enjoying the snow, Scarlett is hired to look after the elderly patriarch of the family and a teenage girl who broke her leg. When the weather changes for the worse and brings the rest of the family back into the log cabin, Scarlett was tears was cabin fever for the large group. Until the blizzard brings a stranger knocking on there door asking for help. He makes Scarlett and the teenager uncomfortable with his old behaviour, did he really get lost and just happen to stumble over the cabin? He's not the only one acting strange, the patriarch of the family is showing signs of distress and exhibiting unusual actions. Is he picking up in something or is it just the storm unsettling everybody? When a body is discovered the holiday atmosphere is over for everybody but for Scarlett it now means she not only needs to protect her charges but she also has to find a killer. With no help coming to rescue them because of the storm and the remoteness of the cabin meaning no neighbours it looks like Scarlett and the others are sharing the cabin with a killer. But who and why?

I liked the narrator. She helps keep the cold away by keeping you on your toes and making an entertaining story even more so.
