Summary

London, 1812. At a fashionable address in leafy Mayfair, a far cry from Detective Stephen Lavender’s usual haunts, a man is found dead in his room. He has been brutally stabbed, but the door is locked from the inside, and the weapon is missing.

The deceased is David MacAdam, an Essex businessman with expensive tastes. As Lavender and Constable Ned Woods travel between London and Chelmsford seeking to understand MacAdam’s final hours and unearth the grisly truth, they uncover a tangled web of deceit behind his stylish facade. The unusual circumstances of MacAdam’s death are nothing compared to the shady nature of his life, and it seems the house on Park Lane is at the heart of a dark conspiracy.

But when a second body turns up, everything they think they’ve learned is thrown into doubt. Can Lavender and Woods find out who’s behind these shocking murders before more lives are ruined?

Best one yet

In previous audible books Lavender came across very sleazy and bombastic. Now he is toned down and a far more enjoyable listen.

The story itself, is captivating and provides a fascinating peak into the vagaries of Georgian life. I look forward to following the further adventures of Lavender and Woods as new books come along.

Another Brilliant Mystery

I thought after Plague Pit and River Bones, I wouldn't like another one of the Det. Lavender mysteries as much, and I was thankfully wrong. The series keeps getting better.

The books are terrific and made even more wonderful by the terrific narration of Michael Page.

If you like a mystery, where you don't need to have Sherlock's deductive powers to solve it, you will enjoy this. Just follow the evidence!

My only regret is that Karen Charlton can't turn these books out faster. More please!

Great Story. Well read.

I have enjoyed all of the books in this series but I think this is the best mystery so far. The plots get better with each book and the narrator does a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life. I am looking forward to the next novel in the series.

Almost as good as first 2 books

I really liked the story. I missed the complexity of plot weave in this book. It was a fun listen, but not as engaging. Michael Page remains one of my favorite narrators. He and Ms Charlton are an excellent fit.

Best Ever

I believe this was the best book of the series. The author states at the end that as she wrote it the words flowed like silk. This is an apt description of the plot. You become involved in the narrative and flow with it. There was a good balance of the mystery and the drama of characters. It is really an excellent book.

Really unhappy with this one

I’m disappointed. I’ve liked books 1-4 so far (3 and 4 more than 1-2 because I’m not fond of the character Magdalena) but this one had a different tone for me and I can’t recommend it.

First of all, the narrator did some voices really oddly and those characters made my head hurt, kind of a whiny raspy.

Secondly, the author went into weight and overeating and I found it hurtful and unlike what I feel either of those characters would act like.

Finally, the descriptions of the bodies were extremely over the top (compared with previous books in this series) and really gross.

If there is a book 6, I will approach it with caution.
