Summary

No one in Heppleburn has a bad word to say about Alice Parry. But here she is, murdered in her own backyard. And when detective Stephen Ramsay starts asking questions in the village, a more ambiguous picture begins to emerge.

Yes, old Mrs Parry was loved by everyone, but sometimes her kindness had caused trouble. Yes, her two nephews were devoted to her, but they didn't really want her interfering in their personal lives.

Even among her neighbours, Alice Parry's helpfulness had sometimes misfired; and after her death, tension tight as a clenched fist grips the uneasy village. Meanwhile, the suspects keep rolling in, and Heppleburn's friendly neighbourhood killer continues his nasty piece of work....

So poor I couldn’t listen to it.

The narration of this was dreadful. I am an avid audiobook fan and was really disappointed with this. Couldn’t listen to it. Wasted my money.

Not great

An Ann Cleeves fan I actually found myself losing the will to live with this title. The characters were poorly developed and the storyline downright boring. I struggled.

Enjoyed the story but not the narrator

didn't guess who did it - light storyline - but I found the narrator a bit too dull. Found it hard to keep track when he moved from one character/story part to another except on chapter changes - felt like he was just reading without much emphasis on paragraph breaks etc.

Great Read

Good description of all the characters. Straight into the story and had you guessing who committed the murder right too the end. Like the inspector would have liked to know what happened to two of the characters.

Good murder mystery

A very typical murder mystery as loved by many mystery fans. Good classical twist at the end.

Refreshing new detective

A great story introducing another detective from Ann Cleeves.
The story doesn’t have the atmosphere of the Shetland or Newcastle based stories but was, nonetheless, a well crafted story that held the reader’s attention right to the end.
