About this listen

When Sheriff Zachariah Fitch hears about a corpse found inside the wall of Maltby le Marsh Abbey, he wants nothing to do with the investigation since that is where his estranged sister resides as a nun. But with the local constable asking for his help, and Lady Vivienne accepting the case for them, he quickly finds himself not only working on a murder, but having to face his ghosts of the past involving his sister.

Lady Vivienne Harlowe has helped the sheriff on several cases. So when a ghost in the graveyard seems to be summoning her, she takes it as a sign that she and the sheriff must travel to Maltby le Marsh to assist with a new murder investigation. Zachariah is her good friend from childhood, and as both of them have lost their spouses, a growing attraction between them makes her wonder if they can keep their relationship professional as they've always agreed to do.

An abbey might seem like a place of solace and sanctuary, but they soon discover that is far from the truth. A sheriff, a lady, her bloodhound, and a little entourage that the sheriff does not approve of, are soon headed to Maltby le Marsh where secrets, horror, and a very active ghost await them.

This 14th-century murder mystery is an excellent listen from start to finish. Elizabeth Rose writes an intriguing and well-paced plot that keeps you guessing, while the historical setting adds a rich atmosphere to the story. The characters are likeable, Harlowe and Fitch make a compelling detective duo, with depth and just the right touch of wit. Kevin E. Green's narration brings each character to life and makes the story easy to follow. Highly recommended. This is the first in the series I have listened to and I hope to listen to the earlier books at some point.
I was kindly given a copy of the book and leave this honest review.

When Sheriff Zachariah Fitch estrange sister comes to him for help with a murder in the abbey where she is a nun. He is reluctant to help. Lady Vivian on the other hand sees this as a way of reuniting the siblings, and bringing a murder to justice.
I am really enjoying this series and look forward to many more.
