About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

An isolated castle, a deadly crime. Is this real or a nightmare?

In a remote castle high up in the Tuscan hills secrets are simmering among its glamorous English residents:

The ailing gentleman art-dealer.

His dazzling niece.

Her handsome Fascist husband.

Their neglected young daughter.

The housekeeper who knows everything,

and Connie, the English widow working for them.

Every night, Connie hears sinister noises and a terrible wailing inside the walls. Is she losing her grip on reality?

Or does someone in the castle want her gone?

For the vast majority of the story, there is a sense of increasing dread which doesn’t reach its climax until almost the final chapter. Not at all what I expected and seemed very drawn-out. Narration is grating at times but generally good with very distinct characters.

Mildly entertaining but superfluous

Listened to first hour. Nothing interesting has happened so giving up. Disappointing a listed as one of top March books in "The I" newspaper.

Don't believe newspaper recommendations

I bought this book to listen to on a long journey. By chapter 3 I was screaming at the author for the lack of pace, the overly detailed prose and a character who may be totally superfluous, unless he turns up later on in the story. I persevered, but not for too much longer, as by now the narrator's voice was beginning to grate. I don't think it is necessary for the narrator to put on a different voice for each character, even when done well. In my opinion the story, the small amount I listened to, was not improved by the narration. In my opinion a waste of a credit. Going by my experience I will not get another book by this author or narrator. I will try to complete listening to this book and will edit this review if I manage to do so.

Not my cup of tea.

The narrator has literally destroyed this story by making it absolutely intolerable to listen to. I realised too late it was the same woman who had destroyed another book. This time I gave up after 3 hours. She elongates each word and rises them in pitch at the end. It’s so over exaggerated that it changes the story. The male voices all have laryngitis and are so awkward they sound as though they have speech impediments. She destroys the gist of the story, turns it into a joke. I have no idea why she speaks in this over exaggerated pantomime way. I even played with the speed but didn’t make any difference

Appalling Narrator text her voice before buying. Destroyed the book
