Summary

Burnt-out social worker Amalie Holmes thinks she's finally caught a lucky break in the form of a free cottage from her mystery great aunt. With nothing to lose, Amalie heads for the hills, or, in this case, the mountains. Turns out the cottage comes with a big family secret: Amalie is from a long line of witches. She quickly discovers that living in a new town isn't easy, especially when lightning strikes whenever she loses her temper!

When an orphaned 11-year-old stands accused of murder, Amalie's social worker instincts compel her to solve the case and clear the child, even if it means digging into painful secrets the town considers long buried. Secrets that paint a target on her back.

Between her crazy family, magic lessons, investigating a murder, and the sexy wizard detective hell-bent on keeping her in line, Amalie's not sure which one will be the death of her first - her newfound abilities or the killer.

A gently paced murder mystery

If you are looking for a story with thrills spiced with a bit of horror, this book isn't for you. As you would expect for a "cozy" mystery, there's lots of character and relationship development. The mystery is gently eased into and out of. There's nothing there to alarm - no violence, no harsh emotions, no creeping menace. The pace is gentle and the performer takes the story at a leisurely speed. In addition, the "chic lit" aspect is subdued, which suits this septuagenarian. Even so, I like the plot and the story and have purchased the 2nd book in the series.

Pretty Good

I am looking forward to the next book. I enjoy paranormal mysteries, trying to solve a murder and at the same time discovering the main character's new talents or gifts. Brave and determined main character.

Well written characters in a basic story

The story and world is very standard modern witch/vampire stuff.
The redemptive quality of the main character lifts the book up a couple of stars

Enjoyable mystery

An enjoyable mystery. The story developed in a believable manor. There was some humor sprinkled throughout. Only real problem was that I didn’t feel any chemistry between the heroine and her romantic interest.

I don't know how this book doesn't have 1 star

I thought the plot seemed very interesting, and I think these could be great books, but they're so terribly written it's just NOT worth it! (And the second book in the series is even worse so if you're thinking it'll get better, like I did, you're going to be very disappointed.) There are the grammatical errors, which are bad, plus I found myself listening, and the characters would be somewhere, then all of a sudden they'd be somewhere new doing something else and I had to rewind to figure out what happened. And the awkward moments, oh man.... the main character does things and has these reactions to things that are so awkward, and it's not in a funny way - it's just BAD writing. Stay away, this series is NOT worth it.
