No husbands, no babies and no repeating their parents’ mistakes.

That was the pact sisters Mara and Nell made at the implosion of their parents’ marriage. And for a while, in the shelter of their aunty Jean’s home, they were each other’s world. But a cosmic fork in the road, at which Mara chose to deviate and diverge, changed everything between the sisters and their once unshakeable bond was fractured beyond recognition.

From the acclaimed author of Piglet comes a profound and stylish intergenerational drama tracing the lives of four fierce women – two sets of sisters across two generations – to explore the infuriating spell of sisterhood and the beauty, captivity and optimism of family in its many forms.

MARA, an artist with only intermittent maternal inclination, has been cleaved in two by motherhood.

NELL, a self-made stockbroker striving for her own version of happiness, hardly recognizes her sister or the life she has chosen.

JEAN is there to pick up the pieces, while the girls’ mother, ANDY, is achingly absent, and not for the first time. Can Jean, in lieu of having a family of her own, hold this one together?

Hazell trains a sharp eye on female relationships and the promises we make to each other as sisters, daughters and mothers – both those we can keep and those we cannot. I haven't stopped thinking about Nell and Mara and Jean and Andy since I put it down.
Mothersick is full of revelatory insights into the process of making art, and making relationships, and forging a family life. Hazell's characters are witty and defiant and horny and impetuous: I loved them. This novel is a rich portrait of sisterhood, as well as of mothering in its kaleidoscopic forms.
A beautifully messy portrait of family and motherhood, and the choices and limitations inherent in being a woman. Hazell's writing absolutely dazzles.
Mothersick is a sophisticated yet tender interrogation of female relationships, not only with one another but with creative freedom itself. The prose is delectable, the characters expertly layered, and the reverberations of wounded love are precise and compelling. Hazell has crafted a chef d’oeuvre, and I’m in awe.
