About this listen

It's 1884, and 14-year-old Sunday Small has been in the Nuneaton workhouse since she was abandoned at birth. The regime is cruel, and if it were not for her dear little friend Daisy, Sunday's life would barely be worth living. And now she's attracted the unwelcome attention of the seedy workhouse master, who will stop at nothing to get her alone. It's time for Sunday to strike out alone in the world, but the brutal world of the workhouse will not let her go without a fight....

This was a wonderful story, it is the first book I have ever read by this author, however after reading this I will be reading more without a doubt. The story although really sad in parts was really uplifting, although I knew some of what was going to come out during the story from the start it did not take away my enjoyment of the book in anyway. Sunday was a lovely character and very well developed, she had really good spirit no matter what was thrown at her and was very strong willed. There were some very emotional scenes in the book but the one that probably tour at my heart the most was when Lavinia spoke to baby Steven while trying to help him fight for his life. A fantastic author who I would highly recommend. The book was based in the midlands, Charlie Sanderson did a very good job with the accents and as she was quite young sounding and the main character was a young girl I thought she was the write choice of reader for this book. Looking forward to getting more by this author in the future.

Amazing and heartwarming.

Despite the story being a little predictable in places, this was a huge joy to listen to. The narration was first class, I will be finding more books narrated by her. Highly recommended escapism.

A truly heart warming listen

This is the second time I've listened to Mothering Sunday, and it had the same effect on me as the first time. It's an emotional journey, telling the story of the life of young Sunday Small, from her troubled birth, through her turbulent childhood and teen years. I won't spoil the ending, other than to warn readers/listeners that it's very emotional.
I'm looking forward to the next instalment.

The start of what I'm sure will be a great series
