Summary
The revelatory thriller from the much-admired and million-copy-selling journalist.
Government minister Patrick Macready has been found dead in his flat. The coroner rules it an accident, a sex game gone wrong.
Jon Swift is from the old stock of journos - cynical, cantankerous and overweight - and something about his friend's death doesn't seem right. Then, days after Macready's flat is apparently burgled, Swift discovers that his friend had been researching a string of Russian government figures who had met similarly 'accidental' fates.
When the police refuse to investigate further, Swift gets in touch with his contacts in Moscow, determined to find out if his hunch is correct. Following the lead, he is soon drawn into a violent underworld where whispers of conspiracies, assassinations and double agents start blurring the line between friend and foe.
The truth comes at a price, and it may cost him everything.

Moscow Midnight
At first I didn’t think I would finish this as I found the narration a little lacking at times, but fortunately I got used to it & I think it improved with the use of accents. Which is good as otherwise I would have missed out on what was a decent story, although the double agent was rather predictable!

Absolutely loved this
This book is absolutely amazing. I agree with one of the other reviews sounds like it could be actually part of his life. Well wrote and extremely well narrated. Loved it. Definitely recommend.

What a great story teller, hard to put down
I almost felt like I knew Jonathan Swift, the twists and turns, the humour his narration all made this book so enjoyable. Well done Mr Simpson, what is next please

Is some of this non-fiction?
I really enjoyed the story and John Simpson's narration.
However, at various times I thought to myself; is this an autobiography? Were there some truths here that Mr Simpson couldn't tell as part of of a news story?
I also find myself inexorably drawn to the 39 Steps, which follows a similar pattern.
Looking forward to the next one!

Terrific!

Not a cliche left unused…
I think we got the message John ‘Swift’ was died in the wool misogynist the first time he spelled it out to us, but that didn’t stop him using every opportunity to make the point again when he could. He’s ‘never met a woman who didn’t react well to comments about her looks’, decries that woman’s bottoms can no longer be patted and is proud of the fact he’ll look a woman in the eye long enough to make her feel uncomfortable..
I get that both author and character are shouting about at ‘advancements’ they see that are making the world a less fun place for white old privately educated men while it improves for those of us not in that demographic but such a shame it took over the book for me… I found myself rolling my eyes SO many times they were almost stuck in my skull for days!
Such a shame as it took away from what was a romp of a story idea based on a real event that I already found interesting.
Narration was better than I’d feared after sample, so that’s a positive!
