Summary

On the eve of World War II, two people are brought together by fate and discover an unexpected passion.

Will drifts into Whitney, Georgia, one lazy afternoon in the summer of 1941, dragging his lonely past behind him. All he asks is for a chance to love. Then he sees Elly's classified ad for a husband, and when he steps across Elly's cluttered yard, Will knows he has come home at last.

Amazing story and narration!

Any additional comments?

I heard the original recording, from cassette - not only is this an incredible story from one of the masters of romance, but Kate Forbes' narration is brilliant, spot-on, and in every way one of the top romance audiobooks. Her performance is phenomenal. Mesmerizing. Perfection. It's been out of print and impossible to find for years - Get this audiobook now!

Wonderful WW2 romance

This is a well written and researched novel with amazing detail, description, believable characters and fast moving story. One of my favorites of Ms Spencer. The narrator was top notch. Time well spent for your entertainment value!
Please do an unabridged audio of her book Vows and consider redoing Spencer's other titles in unabridged reading format please, please!!

4 ½ stars. I felt so good reading this.

Toddlers and having a baby play a larger role than normal for a romance novel.

I read the paperback several years ago and recently listened to the audiobook. I liked it even better this time. The audiobook narrator Kate Forbes was wonderful.

What a lovely story. It felt different from most romance novels. It was written 23 years ago and reflects some of that thinking. It was very sweet. A few times I was teary-eyed - the kind of tears that come from good things happening to people who really need it because of their circumstances. I kept waiting for arguments or fights to separate the couple and was surprised when that did not happen. Instead things just kept getting better and better. The relationship and the individuals were growing and getting better through most of the book. I wasn’t used to that. Sure there was a problem separating the couple near the end (“the formula”). I enjoyed how that resolved.

I loved the wedding vows page 146. She thinks she’s not pretty. This guy truly, truly loves her (and her children) - soooo neat. If you’re looking for hot passionate sex, you don’t want this. Yes there is sex, but it’s softer and secondary. The main attraction is love not lust.

STORY BRIEF:
Eleanor was raised by religious fanatic grandparents, not allowed out of the house, never had friends, made fun of at school. She married, had children, and her husband died. She lives as a recluse. The locals call her crazy. She’s currently pregnant and needs a husband so she puts an ad in the paper.

Will was an orphan, spent time in jail, is a drifter, got a job but was fired when they learned he’d been in jail. He’s hungry. He sees Eleanor’s ad and applies for the job.

Brilliantly done

Any additional comments?

When I saw the unabridged audio book was available I was over the moon! Kate Forbes narrates this story splendidly. Emotion, tone, pacing, accents...everything was wonderfully done.

I first bought this book (an actual paper copy) in 1989. This is one I own both in paperback and e-copy that I re-read several times a year. God, I love this book. Will Parker and Eleanor Dinsmore both have an amazing amount of vulnerability and strength.

The story itself is brilliantly woven and, even after 25 years, and countless rereading, it's still in my top five.

A beautiful story - wonderfully done.

The narrator doesn't miss a beat with this and the story is simple, straightforward and so well done. I had forgotten about how well i liked this movie - and so when i saw this on Audible I didn't hesitate to purchase it - I wasn't disappointed. This narrator is perfect for Will and Ellie and for me, though the end was a forgone conclusion, there was no boredom, I couldn't quit listening. Ms. Spencer writes in an almost lyrical fashion - it is just beautifully done from beginning to end - and I found myself tearing up a few times. Thank you Audible for adding this to the collection, the audio was long over due!!!!

The reason I give a low review

I almost didn’t finish this several times because of the language and explicit sexual details. But the story line was so interesting I wanted to see how it ended so bad I’d just fast forward through bedroom details and cringe at the language. I don’t understand why authors find it necessary to go into such detail or use such language. I love to hear Kate narrate she can make a story.

Great book

This is a wonderful book read, or listened to. Lavyrle Spencer is an amazing author and her words were magnified by the reader.
