About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A stunning debut novel of love, murder, tragedy and redemption.

Lore Rivera was married to two men at once, until on a baking hot day in 1986, one of them found out and shot the other. A secret double life, a tragic murder. That's the story the world knows.

It's not the story that fascinates Cassie Bowman.

Carrying the weight of her own family tragedy, true-crime writer Cassie wants to know more about the mysterious woman at the heart of it all, Lore. How did one woman fall in love with two different men? How did she balance the love and the lies? And, in the aftermath of the worst possible ending, how has she managed to go on?

To her surprise, Cassie finds that Lore is willing to talk. To finally tell her spellbinding, heartbreaking story - about how a dance became an affair; how a marriage became a murder.

As the two women grow closer, Cassie finds she can't help but confess her own darkest secrets. But when she slowly starts to realise that there might be more to the night of the murder than anyone has realised, can either woman face up to the thing they've been hiding from: the truth?

Critic reviews

Intelligent and nuanced . . . raises a host of difficult but fascinating questions

A sprawling, stunning, twisting triumph. By turns heart-pounding and heart-wrenching, this is a story of marriage and murder, of the secrets we endure and the lies we tell ourselves to keep them. So achingly clever and stylish, More Than You'll Ever Know is a special novel from a very special writer (Chris Whitaker)
Breath-taking and brimming with empathy, exploration of motherhood, marriage, and the consequences that come from obsessions with true crime
I was enthralled with More Than You'll Ever Know from the very first pages of Gutierrez's rich and assured writing. A gripping and thoughtful exploration of motherhood and marriage, the complexity of female desire, and the consequence of our obsession with true crime, it's one of the best suspenseful dramas I've read in years. An exceptional, stunning debut-I absolutely loved it (Ashley Audrain, New York Times bestselling author of The Push)
A sweeping novel, unflinching and evocative in its engrossing study of love, motherhood, sex, Mexico, journalism and more
A stunning portrait of female reckoning - Katie Gutierrez creates layered and vivid characters, forced to confront the complexities of their own desires. An immaculate novel that explores marriage and choice, partnership and autonomy, More Than You'll Ever Know is a wonder to behold (Danya Kukafka, bestselling author of Notes On An Execution)
Smart, sophisticated and sly, Katie Gutierrez masterfully weaves a tale of two families, a double life and an ultimate act of passion that will have you on the edge of your seat as the truth is revealed. There are thrillers that tease, but More Than You'll Ever Know will haunt your dreams. A stunning debut from a magnificent storyteller (Adriana Trigiani)
A tale of two women, two timelines, two sides of a border and two husbands, More Than You'll Ever Know is a novel both compelling and resonant - a novel which grips you like a thriller as you are reading it, with characters and themes which linger in the mind like the best literary fiction. This is an unforgettable story, told brilliantly - one of those novels where from the first page you know you are in the hands of a writer of verve, confidence and conviction (Ellery Lloyd)
A taut, unputdownable thriller, but also a gorgeously written examination of motherhood, ambition, and sacrifice, set between Texas and Mexico city. I loved every moment. (Grace Li, Sunday Times bestselling author of Portrait of a Thief)
This is a crime book unlike any I've read before. More Than You'll Ever Know is written with such beauty and tenderness - about the ferocity of love, the lure of desire, and the strength of family bonds. It blew me away (L.V. Matthews)

Not my usual listen, I absolutely loved this. Narration is perfect. I felt connected to these women.

I wasn't sure about the books topic to begin with, but I soon warmed to it. I did find the additional Spanish dialogue difficult, basically because I don't speak Spanish! The families involved were well developed and the story line intriguing. The personal relationship of the writer was badly compromised and you are left wondering if it will survive. Family love is at the heart of this book.
