Paulette Wilson had always assumed she was British. She had spent most of her life in London working as a cook; she even worked in the House of Commons' canteen. How could someone who had lived in England since being a primary school pupil suddenly be classified as an illegal immigrant? It was only through Amelia Gentleman's tenacious investigative and campaigning journalism that it emerged that thousands were in Paulette's position. What united them was that they had all arrived in the UK from the Commonwealth as children in the 1950s and 1960s.

Story
Could happiness lie in helping others and being open to accepting help yourself? Mentors: How to Help and Be Helped describes the impact that a series of significant people have had on the author - from the wayward youths he tried to emulate growing up in Essex, through the first ex-junkie sage, to the people he turns to today to help him be a better father. It explores how we all - consciously and unconsciously - choose guides, mentors and heroes throughout our lives and examines the new perspectives they can bring.

Have you ever been told to smile more, been teased about your accent or had your name pronounced incorrectly? If so, you’ve probably already faced bias in your everyday life. We like to believe that we are all fair-minded and egalitarian but we all carry biases that we might not even be aware of. We might believe that we live in a post-racial society, but racial tension and inequality is pernicious and pervasive. We might believe that gender inequality is a thing of the past, but it is still ubiquitous.

It took me a lifetime to have the courage and the clarity to write my memoir. I want to tell the story of the moments - the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the debacles and the dreams - that contributed to the person I am today. This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival, and my songs. Unfiltered. I went deep into my childhood and gave the scared little girl inside of me a big voice. I let the abandoned and ambitious adolescent have her say, and the betrayed and triumphant woman I became tell her side.

Summary
An AudioFile Earphones Award-winning production
This program is read by Alicia Keys, with special guest appearances by family and friends, including Oprah Winfrey, Jay-Z, and Michelle Obama.
An intimate, revealing look at one artist’s journey from self-censorship to full expression
As one of the most celebrated musicians in the world, Alicia Keys has enraptured the globe with her heartfelt lyrics, extraordinary vocal range, and soul-stirring piano compositions. Yet away from the spotlight, Alicia has grappled with private heartache - over the challenging and complex relationship with her father, the people-pleasing nature that characterized her early career, the loss of privacy surrounding her romantic relationships, and the oppressive expectations of female perfection.
Since Alicia rose to fame, her public persona has belied a deep personal truth: She has spent years not fully recognizing or honoring her own worth. After withholding parts of herself for so long, she is at last exploring the questions that live at the heart of her story: Who am I, really? And once I discover that truth, how can I become brave enough to embrace it?
More Myself is part autobiography, part narrative documentary. Alicia’s journey is revealed not only through her own candid recounting, but also through vivid recollections from those who have walked alongside her. The result is a 360-degree perspective on Alicia’s path, from her girlhood in Hell’s Kitchen and Harlem to the process of growth and self-discovery that we all must navigate.
In More Myself, Alicia shares her quest for truth - about herself, her past, and her shift from sacrificing her spirit to celebrating her worth. With the raw honesty that epitomizes Alicia's artistry, More Myself is at once a riveting account and a clarion call to listeners: To define themselves in a world that rarely encourages a true and unique identity.
A Macmillan Audio production from Flatiron Books
"[Alicia Keys] often sings snippets of her music, which brings her story to life and elevates the listening experience. Spoken cameos from everyone from her husband to Michelle Obama add another layer of interest to the audiobook. Keys fans will be delighted by the behind-the-scenes stories she shares; those unfamiliar with her music will still enjoy her upbeat, unpretentious narration." (Booklist)

Title should be Safe Version of Myself
I like A Keys but I found her sharing very little of herself in this title. Yes, she admitted she was promiscusous at a young age and how she got her record deal but she's so safe the entire book and I was listening to a person perfect go through her perfect adult life. It didn't sound authentic when she described how she met Swiss and did not mention any of the controversy surrounding her beginnings with him when it was daily news fodder. In passing she mentions his other kids (5) in total. Only thing I was surprised about was her relationship with Kerry her first live in boyfriend and their age gap. She's a hard worker and I enjoyed all the mentions about her trip to Egypt but this story was very bland. Her voice has changed so much but I am happy for her journey but this story came off cookie cutter. On a CVD-19 scale of audio book readings, I give it 2 out of 5 masks.

Disappointed
Hmmmm....I will start with how much I enjoyed learning of Alicia's early life. I felt such an openness from her as she allowed us into places we'd never go had she not let us in. I found that the closer we got to Alicia the star, the more surface her story became which made for many boring chapters. It is her life...her story to tell, but why write a book if you're going to gloss over things that have been publicized and not correct or elaborate on them? I found that to be quite disappointing which made this book average at best for me.
