Sorry, Stephen

Loved both previous volumes of Fry's autobiography (and most of his novels), but his full-on entrance into drugged-up luvvydom, mostly told by extracts from his diaries at the time, did not endear me further. Maybe this period of his life is too close for proper reflection.

Fry's excellent narration let down by content

Having hugely enjoyed The Fry Chronicles, I had high expectations of this, but sadly was left feeling a little disappointed. A very large portion of the book consists of an extended diary extract from 1993, replete with stories of cocaine abuse, excessive partying, and tales of debauchery centred largely around London's members' clubs, principally the Groucho.

While this starts off reasonably entertaining, and there are some interesting morsels of story, I was left feeling, after dissection of yet another riveting Kasparov-Short chess match, or the twentieth time I'd heard a variation on "drank too much cognac, did a few lines in the toilets, home by 2am, did a couple more lines then off to bed", that it could all have done with a lot more editing to maintain some semblance of narrative arc and pace.

Don't get me wrong, Fry remains a consummate wordsmith and I could listen to him read from a government white paper on waste management and be captivated by his sheer presence, but, after his previous memoir, this title left me feeling a little short-changed.

Have I read this before?

I frequently had the feeling that I'd read this book before. I had not but, having read Stevens previous two autobiographies I can understand why. Perhaps best to just read this one. Not really a criticism as I still really enjoyed it, laughing out loud in places.

I suspect Stephen himself was not satisfied...

What made the experience of listening to More Fool Me the most enjoyable?

Wonderful language and delivery

Would you recommend More Fool Me to your friends? Why or why not?

I do for it's wit

Which scene did you most enjoy?

John Mills anecdote

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really

Any additional comments?

I felt short changed. For whatever reason I had expected to cover the 'cocaine years' and see closure on that period of his life.

Charming. Lots of who's who and much 1993 diary

It was an insight ad good reminder of those who were around as I grew up.

Did leave you wanting to know what happened post 1993.

Lovely

Beautifully read by the author-which if you're a fan gave it a wonderful personal feel and expression. If your not a fan, listen anyway -you cannot help but be seduced by his dulcet tones.

Brilliant work

Enjoyed tremendously as always. Honest funny and insightful and makes me slightly resentful of never being able to enjoy the pleasures of the Groucho.

Another world

A glimpse in to a world , I will never know. I enjoyed this rather small glimpse in to the gregarious life of Stephen Fry with white powder to assist. Yet it has such sadness .
