Tim Piggot-Smith reads J. Meade Falkner's exciting tale of a boy who gets caught up in a dangerous adventure with smugglers and treasure. Orphaned John Trenchard is just 15 when his adventures begin...

Growing up by the sea in the village of Moonfleet, John is captivated by the local legend of the ghostly Blackbeard, who rises on winter nights to search for his lost treasure. However, by accidentally discovering a secret passage under the churchyard, John stumbles on the true secret of the village: smuggling. Little does he know that becoming involved in the illegal trade leads to him being accused of murder - with a reward for his capture.

He is forced to leave home and goes on the run. Will he be able to clear his name? And can he finally track down Blackbeard's treasure?

This is an abridged version of the classic Moonfleet, but it’s just as suspenseful, exciting and exhilarating. A great way of enjoying this classic, great story if you’re short on time.

I listened because this was one of the first "classics" that we had to read at school. I'd forgotten that even at the age of eleven, I found the plot episodic. Perhaps not every child would mind that. As an adult, more than any other aspect I enjoy the glimpse into history written by a contemporary. Overall, now, not thrilled but this book's saving grace is the narration; it's really excellent.

Episodic, but fantastic narration

I remember reading this at school when I was around 12. I hated it, found it boring and could not get into it then or remember the story (then or now). 40 years later I came across this in the Plus catalogue and thought I would give it a go. It must be abridged as it is only 90 mins or so long. The story is pretty good actually, and the narration is excellent. I am half considering looking for the full version but maybe not a great spend of a credit now that I know the story.

Better than I remember from school

Well narrated and lived once again. Thank you Tim Piggott Smith’s reading was evocative and took me back to my home.

An old lost childhood book brought back to life…
