About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before.

The audiobook of Monstrous Regiment is narrated by Katherine Parkinson, star of The IT Crowd and Here We Go. BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

'THAT'S THE TROUBLE ABOUT THE GOOD GUYS AND THE BAD GUYS! THEY'RE ALL GUYS!'

In the small yet aggressive country of Borogravia, there are strict rules citizens must follow. For a start, women belong in the kitchen - not in jobs, pubs, or indeed trousers. And certainly not on the front line.

Polly Perks has to become a boy in a hurry if she wants to find her missing brother in the army. Cutting off her hair and wearing the trousers is easy. Going to war however, is not.

Polly and her fellow raw recruits are suddenly in the thick of a losing battle. All they have on their side is the most artful sergeant in the army and a vampire with a lust for coffee.

It's time to make a stand.

The first book in the Discworld series-The Colour of Magic-was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Critic reviews

'Like Jonathan Swift, Pratchett uses his other world to hold up a distorting mirror to our own, and like Swift he is a satirist of enormous talent ... incredibly funny ... compulsively readable.'
'A true original among contemporary writers - a fantasist who loves naff humour and silly names, and yet whose absurd world is, at heart, a serious portrait of the jingoistic fears that keep us at each other's throats.'
'The great Terry Pratchett, whose wit is metaphysical, who creates an energetic and lively secondary world, who has a multifarious genius for strong parody as opposed to derivative manipulation of past motifs, who deals with death with startling originality. Who writes amazing sentences.' (A.S. Byatt)

This has to be my favourite Discworld novel (so I'm going to be the worst critic, I know).
I loved the versions read by Stephen Briggs and Tony Robinson.
if I'd have listened to the sample I wouldn't have bothered,
I'm gutted, my first ever bad experience of terry pratchett's work after being a fan for over 20 years.

not quite right

I don't think there was any part of this recording that I didn't enjoy. The performance from Katharine Parkison was so refreshing and engaging that I didn't even mind her impression of Vimes and Angua. As for the story, Terry Pratchett was a genius, and this has become one of my favourite discworld books. I'm a bit upset that I'll never get to read it for the first time again.

Beautiful
