Summary
Promoted to the rank of Monsignor, Quixote and his friend Sancho, the ex-mayor of El Toboso and an avid Communist, set off on their travels in the rusty old car the call Rocinante. Together, they roam through modern-day Spain in a brilliant picaresque fable that, like Cervantes' classic, offers enduring insights into our life and times.
Cyril Cusack reads Grahame Greene’s moving, hilarious novel about a Catholic priest and his friend, a Marxist mayor.

Not one for misophonia sufferers
Cyril Cusack is a good actor and does the voices, aptly capturing the absurdity and humour of this largely dialogue-based novel, but he must have been pretty old when this was recorded and his voice is close-miked and wheezy. Lots of saliva clicking and mouth noises, as well a rasping breath noises, perhaps in character for the eponymous hero and his superannuated Sancho but quite irritating to anyone listening on headphones and certainly not one for those of you with any hint of misophonia.
The novel itself is not the very finest Greene, but it's enjoyable and thought-provoking, if a little confined by being calqued on the more famous tale of the Monsignor's putative ancestor (also fictional).

Give Cyril Cusack an Oscar !
What made the experience of listening to Monsignor Quixote the most enjoyable?
Outstanding story and narrating.
I was recommended this book by a friend and someone else said that it would help to read the original Don Quixote, so I downloaded it, but to be honest, it's not my type of book.
The Monsignor Quixote can easily stand alone on it's own merits, and while those that have read the Don Q. will appreciate the various references to it, but I enjoyed the book with just the briefest references to the Don Q by way of explanation.
Any additional comments?
Highly recommended!

A lightly comic, thought-provoking gem
Greene's modern rewrite of Don Quixote combines comedy with deep thought. His contemporary Quixote (a priest) and Sancho (a communist) travel around post-Franco-era Spain in a clapped-out car. Their adventures and conversations are whimsical, clever and memorable. Regarding narration: Cyril Cusack was one of Ireland's greatest stage and screen actors, but not everyone enjoys his 'mumbling' delivery as much as I do. In this recording Cusack's characterisations are pitch-perfect, even if his reading seems sometimes flustered. Be sure to sample the recording first, as Cusack's style may not be to your taste.

Cure
Wonderful book superbly narrated, Cyril Cusack really brings the dialogues and the characters alive.
Sad and bit mystified by comments about Cusack's delivery – a cure maybe to listen on full speakers not just headphones which may account for backgrounds sounds coming to the fore?

Superb but not quite a perfect performance
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was quite fun and very entertaining. The performance was excellent but the experience war marred by loud audible swallows and breaths picked up in the audio. Very nitpicky but noticeable (for me). It didn't detract from the experience and I am looking forward to giving this another listen in the future.

Outstanding story telling
A wonderful story and the last religious novel by Graham Greene. Cyril Cusack brings the two main characters to life as they discuss faith and politics. A wonderful meditation on life.

wonderfully written and beautifully read
This is my all time favourite book, by my all time favourite author, but Cusack adds such wonderful personality to the characters. Gentle pace but beautiful allegories and interpretation of religious and political dogma. when you are forced to put it down/ turn it off, you can't help bit keep thinking about it

Lovely story spoilt by the reading.
I enjoyed the story very much, but the reading leaves a lot to be desired. I find the effected pauses and stumbling very annoying.
