Summary

The book has information for patients and practitioners on optimizing mitochondrial function for greater health and longevity.

Why do we age? Why does cancer develop? What's the connection between heart failure and Alzheimer's disease or infertility and hearing loss? Can we extend lifespan, and if so, how? What is the exercise paradox? Why do antioxidant supplements sometimes do more harm than good? Many will be amazed to learn that all these questions, and many more, can be answered by a single point of discussion: mitochondria and bioenergetics.

In Mitochondria and the Future of Medicine, naturopathic doctor Lee Know tells the epic story of mitochondria - the widely misunderstood and often-overlooked powerhouses of our cells. The legendary saga began over two billion years ago, when one bacterium entered another without being digested, which would evolve to create the first mitochondrion. Since then, for life to exist beyond single-celled bacteria, it's the mitochondria that have been responsible for this life-giving energy. By understanding how our mitochondria work, in fact, it is possible to add years to our lives, and life to our years.

Current research, however, has revealed a dark side: many seemingly disconnected degenerative diseases have tangled roots in dysfunctional mitochondria. However, modern research has also endowed us with the knowledge on how to optimize its function, which is of critical importance to our health and longevity.

Lee Know offers cutting-edge information on supplementation and lifestyle changes for mitochondrial optimization, such as CoQ10, D-Ribose, cannabinoids, and ketogenic dietary therapy and how to implement their use successfully.

Mitochondria and the Future of Medicine is an invaluable resource for practitioners interested in mitochondrial medicine and the true roots of chronic illness and disease as well as anyone interested in optimizing their health.

Heavy going

I really paid close attention, but coming to it as a layman I really struggled to follow what was being said. ATCs, PPQs ETCs. It was all beyond me and difficult to pick up, learn and retain. Is that the fault of me or the book? I don’t know, but if you are having trouble sleeping, this may help.

health: longevity and illness explained

plough through the first couple of chapters in spite of any lack of experience in biology that you might be concerned about. absolute gold dust. helping to connect the dots in a nee health paradigm.

Hard work

20% interesting information, 80% in-depth biology and chemistry that was so far beyond my ability to comprehend it was essentially meaningless.

Absolutely Fascinating even for a layman

The first book I played twice since joining Audible, firstly because the content is quite complex but equally it puts a fascinatingly different perspective on common diseases, longevity, weight loss and more... Thoroughly recommend for anyone interested in the next era of medical science!

Informative!

Good detail on mitochondrial function and cellular energy production , without a biochemistry background this book is great to understand the core pincuplies of some key processes and in good step by step detail that many either books on nutrition just gloss over as if readers wouldn't be interested, wish there were more audible books like this .

Liberating!

Part of the Life Extension movement, understanding AGING as a disease, and not inevitable, explores scientific ways to add joy and power, to live up to 115-120 years. Why not? Read this along with Lifespan, by Dr David Sinclair, & The Switch, by Clements.

Mitochondria; Not just ATP energy generators...

If you're looking to build a house, you don't start building the roof. You start with the foundation, build the rest of the framework from the ground up. Same thing with the human body when it comes to health and wellness. Mitochondria are the foundation of health at a cellular level. When Mitochondria function optimally, it means the rest of your body and it's metabolism is working as it should. When your metabolism is off, it impacts your Mitochondria and subsequently energy production and overall health and wellness. Its a cyclical relationship and one that we generally don't think of. We tend to think that the Mitochondria just handle their business as part of normal metabolic function. Unfortunately that's not the case. There are so many factors that go into metabolic function that it would take an entire book to explain them all in detail. This is that book. If you're looking to optimize health, and understand that you build a strong house from the foundation up - this book is essential reading. The great thing is you don't need a medical degree to understand it either. A basic level of biology, physics and anatomy and physiology is enough to really get a lot of value from this material.

Great knowledge/ tough read

The book is on the next level and is hard to understand if you don't know a little to begin with. A significant book in the search for curing of diseases, part of the puzzle

mostly good

This is pretty technical with a lot of vocabulary that is very specific to biology. For the average person you're left feeling like the recommendations for supplements are critical for survival. The book talks like it is an open and shut case. That was the one thing I did not like about the book. It seemed like some of the supplement recommendations didn't have a lot of scientific testing behind them. at least not on human beings. You don't know for sure about side effects from some of the supplements. That being said, the descriptions he gives about how the body operates are very eye-opening and interesting, technical jargon aside.

Die at a young age!

This is a fantastic and essential book for your library. It also contains crucial and fundamental insights into the role of CoQ 10 and PPQ's effect on enzymes that are responsible for mitochondrial health, repair and proliferation, aka youth and longevity.

Very Insightful

I don't usually write book reviews but this book is exceptional. The science gets a little deep in places but not so much that it takes away from the book. A must read if your goal is understanding disease and aging.
