Book three in the magnificent Empire Trilogy by best-selling authors Raymond E. Feist and Janny Wurts. Welcome to the final play of the game. Now revered as the Servant of the Empire, Mara of the Acoma is in more danger than ever before. Not only does she face threats from the brotherhood of assassins and the cunning spies of rival ruling houses, but she has attracted the attention of the awesome Assembly of Magicians, who see her as a threat to their power.

But Mara has not reached her position through luck or accident of fate. Surrounded on all sides by enemies determined to bring her down, Mara must draw on her deepest resources to secure her place as Mistress of the Empire once and for all.

Regarded as a brilliant standalone!

I am not ashamed to say, I did not read the prequels to this Book 3 of the Empire Trilogy - Daughter of the Empire and Servant of the Empire. However, perhaps it's because I did not, that I found the Mistress of the Empire and the characters to be so unexpectedly fascinating and witty. Perhaps if I had read the other Books, I may not have been so frequently lost with the numerous names/characters, understood a little more of warring factions/houses and the true extent of the political and emotional turmoil experienced by the characters; I might have also appreciated the fantasy world so vividly described. Notwithstanding, because the authors possess such astounding skill and intellect, reflecting ever so often to events or issues that arose in the previous Books, I was able to absorb and thoroughly enjoy this Book 3, appreciating the different dynamics to the gripping tale; that of politics, altruism, economics (trade, commerce, slavery), war (fighting/action), culture ( rich, ingrained, different and competitive), romance, loss, loyalty, epic fantasy (featuring magic and mystical creatures), etc - this Book/Trilogy is so "all-encompassing", there's something to keep everyone engaged!!. I do not think reading the end of the Trilogy first will put me off reading the other Books, if anything, I'm now feeling compelled to start it from the beginning and will be excited to read the last Book again!!

Tanis Rodriguez is fantastic

She really brings this series to life. It's odd, the sample just doesn't do it justice. Fantastic story and I heartily recommend!

sublime

I've read every book written about the twin worlds of midkemia and kelewan, and loved them all. I've thoroughly enjoyed listening to the narration of these books, reliving the stories, the twists and turns of the plot. Ms Rodriguez had done a fantastic job of setting the tone and telling the stories of some of my most favourite characters in the whole series. thank you so much.

Wonderful conclusion

You always worry when a series comes to a conclusion that they will not end it the way that you have come to hope. However this conclusion works perfectly for me and I am very happy with how this ended.

Satisfying End

This was a long one and at times I found myself drifting away but it was a satisfying end to the trilogy. I found Mara’s exploits a bit far-fetched even for her own untouchable exalted station but it was gripping to the end and ambitious story telling.

The narrator grew on me over the three books and I came to love her tone and character voices even more on this edition.

This was a strong final book to this collection of books in the overall Riftwar Saga world - not quite as enjoyable as the original trilogy but one I will miss nonetheless. I hope some of the future books I will read will return to this world even for a fleeting moment as it really has been an intriguing yarn, well told with great imagination.
