About this listen

From the bestselling author and creator of the hit Netflix drama Fool Me Once comes a thrilling and emotional ride about the ties we have to our past - and the devastating lies that bind us together...

Surfing an online dating site, detective Kat Donovan feels her whole world explode. Staring back at her is her ex-fiancé, the man who shattered her heart-and whom she hasn't seen in eighteen years.

But when Kat reaches out to the man in the profile, an unspeakable conspiracy comes to light. As Kat begins to investigate, her feelings are challenged about everyone she's ever loved-even her father, whose cruel murder so long ago has never been fully explained.

With lives on the line, including her own, Kat must venture deeper into the darkness than she ever has before and discover if she has the strength to survive what she finds there.©2014 Harlan Coben

Critic reviews

Coben's accomplished plotting shows why he tops the bestseller lists, and his supporting characters are as memorable as ever.
"Coben draws the disparate plot strands together with masterly authority."
The absolute master of tense and punchy has pulled off another tightly-plotted treat for crime fans... Superb stuff.
"A truly nerve-shredding thriller."
Genius American crime writer Coben has a knack of writing mysteries that are emotionally engaging as well as taut and suspenseful, and this is perhaps his most deeply felt effort yet, with a witty, smart woman at its centre.
"King of twisty thrillers Harlan Coben returns with another good 'un... Packed with atmosphere and shock twists, this is worth turning off your phone for!"
This book held me spellbound. It is superbly paced, it has believable, credible characters, it is, in short, a brilliant story, told by a writer who is at the very top of his game. And now I have to go and try to catch up on all the damn work I failed to get on with because of this book! If you see this book, buy it and read it. (Michael Jecks)
"[A] gripping thriller."
This fast-moving novel grabs attention from the opening page and does not let go until the final surprise. Gripping, suspenseful and occasionally poignant, this is a great read.
"The sheer brio of Coben's narrative plate-spinning gives it all an entertaining chutzpah."
"A master of the multiple twist. Just as it seems an explanation is within reach, the reader is hammered with another, even more shocking surprise." (Marcel Berlins)
Coben orchestrates his story perfectly as Kat begins to sense the magnitude of the horror at work ... Once again, he has brilliantly used a current trend, in this case internet dating, to create a can't-put-it-down thriller
The best-selling master of suspense has written another twisty ripped-from-the-headlines page-turning stand-alone that could be his best yet

gripping

Great characters and their parts intertwined to make this an excellent listen. Main characters are well developed with associated connections to them that help join the story together brilliantly.

Gripping and tense storyline

The dulcet tones and clear diction of Richard Armitage, make it oh so easy to forgive the occasional bleeper in the anglicised pronunciation of the American writer, Coben. The threads of the story are drawn together with the flair we have come to expect of Coben. Although, despite the smattering of red herrings I found it quite predictabl.

Don't you just hate it when you guess the outcome!!
