Emma Appleby's arrival in the County Durham village of Tow Law is sudden and mysterious, provoking deep suspicion in the locals. And because she has a child with her, seemingly out of marriage, they want nothing to do with her - except for pub landlord Mick Castle.

When Emma opens an academy and sets herself up in competition with the local school, she provokes a savage response from the community. But she will not be deterred - even when her past catches up with her and Mick is forced to choose between family and love.

Lovely story and great voices on the audible better than watching TV. Thoroughly recommend the book.

Fabulous wish there was a sequel

This is a gentle breeze of a novel. No surprises just a great story, easy on the mind and strong on historical authenticity.

Really enjoyable novel

I've lost count of the number of times I've both read and listened to Miss Applby's story. I never get bored of it. It's so well written and narrated, and who doesn't like a happy ever after ending.

A lovely story to listen to again and again...

Probably enjoy reading the book rather than listen on audio, but still a good book.

The narrator is not too bad, she reads in good clear precise UK English & tries well when she changes vocals to interpret the different characters.

I will look for other stories by this author in Whyspersynce so I can enjoy reading along whilst a narrator reads the book. All the rage now.

A good Background Story
