Summary

Ironman is a sports phenomenon that has come to symbolize the very best of human striving, achievement, and excellence. And race announcer Mike Reilly is known throughout the endurance sports world as the "Voice of Ironman."

Every year, over 300,000 people around the world compete in a series of long-distance triathlons that test the outer limits of their physical abilities and mental toughness. Some do it for glory, some to test themselves, some to honor lost loved ones or colleagues, some to bring healing to their troubled lives.

Over the years, hundreds of Ironman athletes have shared their tales with Reilly. In this book, he tells some of the stories that have touched and inspired him, in the hope that they will do the same for the listener.

A young woman races in a contest against cancer that threatens her life. A soldier carries a flag through the full marathon distance to keep alive the memory of fallen comrades. Two of the sport's most decorated champions do battle in the greatest head-to-head competition ever seen in any sport. Parents put their family back together after the loss of a child.

Reilly has witnessed it all, and brings it to life in a series of riveting stories that will have readers re-thinking their notions of what people are capable of when pushed to their limits.

Goosebumps !!

Mike captures the absolute joy of crossing the line and is able to somehow articulate the inexplicable thrall of IRONMAN.
Having been rendered speechless when I made it over the line (apparently that's ok !) I'd like to say 'thank you' now. Thank you for getting me over the line and thank you for writing such an amazing book. Aloha x

Dissapointed

I’ve met Mike Reilly, he’s a really nice down to earth guy but I found the book disappointing. For me I would have liked more stories about the big rivalries and epic races interspersed with stories of those amazing athletes that overcame personnel struggles to prevail.

There was such an endless stream of people overcoming adversity that after a while I became numb to their achievements rather than want to celebrate them.

I love Ironman (I’ve done four) and Mike, but this book didn’t come anywhere near replicating the excitement, passion, and raw emotion experienced on race days.

Just Wow!!!!!

Amazing insight into some of the most amazing stories of ordinary people overcoming adversity and going on to complete one of the toughest races in the world. I think the fact that Mike narrates this book himself it gives you a deeper connection to the stories. highly recommended.

Inspiration for any athlete

Mike Reilly is the voice of Ironman, and one of the most inspirational speakers. This book had me in historical as well as tears. I am lucky enough that he has called my name in 8/9 of my races, and hearing his amazing stories of his career is simply mesmerizing!

Whatever your goals this book will inspire you!

What an incredibly inspiring book! Whether you are training for Ironman or something else, this book will leave you inspired! I listened to this while training for my first 140.6 Ironman in June and I can't be more excited. I was overcome by emotions as I listened to Mike share story after story full of inspiration. I can't wait to hear those 4 words in a couple of months..

My first Ironman

I just started training for my first triathlon (Ironman) so I’m indulging in every motivation book I can. I’m a broken service member and this book closed the loop on my fear of people questioning how I’m disabled but am training to do an Ironman. Not sure why I care about what others think or how they judge. Mike pays tribute to service members and people with all types of disabilities. The stories were inspiring. Great book and I look forward to Mike calling my name! Fingers crossed the Ironman are not cancelled this year.

A spectacular set of stories about the strength of the human spirit

The specific stories told about how seemingly everyday people use triathlon to overcome insurmountable odds is beyond inspiring. Mike tells these stories with great clarity and conviction, making this book a fantastic journey to be on.

Brought me back to 2003 Wisc Ironman

I so enjoyed this book. It is definitely on my list to relisten to as it's that good. I enjoyed the wide array of athletes Mike included and also learning more about him. I gratefully have been welcomed by Mike twice at Wisc IM in 2003 and 2011.. Not to bad for someone deathly afraid of open water.

True Inspiration Not Just Athlete but for Human

I originally purchased looking for extra motivation to complete Ironmans but after listening to his book (twice so far), his humble stories show the true potential of humans. I'm not just talking about the ones born of super athletic gifts but the "average joes" that came out impossible odds. Mike personal and intimate stories brings tears and motivation.

From athletes that have suffered tragic loss, from battling ALS, to AIDs to PTSD and accidents so severe they should be dead. As a military veteran, I also appreciate Mike going into athletes dealing w/ PTSD and even helping people overcome pain or depression so grave, they wanted to just die.

Mike never takes credit but his impact to this sport and his 4 simple words "You are an Ironman" can literally change or in some cases save you life. In these desperate times, we know more stories like these from the amazing book.
