Summary

Hard Duty: Sixteen billion dead. In humanity's last brush with the Merkiaari, it was nearly wiped out in a war that spanned decades. When survey ship captain Jeff Colgan discovers a new alien race, he's required to investigate. But what if the life form is as deadly as the Merkiaari?

As the aliens discover Colgan's ship and begin to hunt him down, the captain's mission changes from one of study to one of survival.

What Price Honor: Nanotechnology was all that kept humanity afloat in their brutal war against the Merkiaari, and it led directly to the creation of vipers, a regiment of cyborg super soldiers tasked with protecting the Alliance. When Gunnery Sergeant Gina Fuentez finds one of the fabled viper cyborgs in a terrorist camp during a mission, her squad comes under attack. Two members of her squad are dead, and she'll face the same fate if she can't escape the ensuing firefight.

Operation Oracle: General Burgton's self-imposed mission is to safeguard the alliance from future Merkiaari attacks. As the black missions Burgton authorizes begin to fail, he spends trillions of dollars on a forbidden solution: artificial intelligence. When the project collapses, Burgton compounds his crime. If he can't build an AI, he'll just have to steal one!

Not my thing

The Story didn't really take me. I Guess that if you like story's like John G. Hemry/Jack Campbell's the 'lost fleet' series's you'll enjoy this.
if you like Peter F. Hamilton or Iain M. Banks then this is probably not for you.

Fantastic

Already owned and loved the books. Thought I would venture into the world of audio books, and I am very glad I did. Mikael does a fantastic job as the narrator, bringing the story alive. Great narrator, great story, well worth a try.

Good content, well written... Story lacking

I bought this because I listen to audiobooks while I work, and this set represents a whole lot of bang for your buck.

All fairly standard sci-fi tropes. First contact, AI, supersoldiers, nanotechnology, galactic war against hostile aliens etc.

It's well written, but the author is clearly more in love with elucidating on his world and in particular, the technology therein, than telling a good story.

That isn't to say the stories are bad, but I certainly wasn't gripped. The writing is decent, most of the characters are a little thin but have plausible motivations. Overall I'm a little luke warm and won't rush to continue the series.

A long book, but worth the listen.

What made the experience of listening to Merkiaari Wars Series the most enjoyable?

How the story is told on multiple fronts. My favourite parts were the super human vipers.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Viper Eric. This is the first enhanced soldier that we are introduced to, and it shows just how powerful the vipers are.

What about Mikael Naramore’s performance did you like?

A pleasure to listen to. Distinctive voices made each character easy to distinguish from the others.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

They will return

A new space saga that sees earth recovering after the Merkiaari War, venturing out looking for new allies.

Any additional comments?

"This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBlast dot com."
A good start to the series, following different story lines that will hopefully come together in book 2 and 3, which is included in this omnibus collection.

Great story!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would not recommend this book to any friend, but just those that love sci-fi. Fantastic performance with a wide range of characters makes for a great listen.

What did you like best about this story?

I like when humanity has reached the stars and lives on multiple planets, fighting the be-all end-all plague of the galaxy!

Have you listened to any of Mikael Naramore’s other performances? How does this one compare?

As allways his performance is outstanding.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

excellent star adventure

an excellent star adventure for any sci-fi fan although sometimes in places a little long winded and recapping maybe too many points but very good value for money and compelling listening
