About this listen

'A stunning self-portrait of a woman trying to make sense of the misogyny and sexism she has faced throughout her life.' - TIME Magazine

In early 2021, popular artist Anna Marie Tendler checked herself into a psychiatric hospital following a year of crippling anxiety, depression and self-harm. Over two weeks, she underwent myriad psychological tests, participated in numerous therapy sessions, connected with fellow patients and experienced profound breakthroughs, such as when a doctor noted, "There is a you inside that feels invisible to those looking at you from the outside."

In Men Have Called Her Crazy, Tendler recounts her hospital experience as well as pivotal moments in her life that preceded and followed. This is a memoir that speaks to every woman who has been made to question her own sanity, doubt herself and her worth. Anna Marie Tendler's powerful writing, insight and clarity enabled her to find a way out of the narratives that had been foisted on her since girlhood and create her own, new story. This beautiful and heartfelt book invites us to do the same.

This stunning literary self-portrait examines the unreasonable expectations and pressures women face in the 21st century. Yet overwhelming and despairing as that can feel, Tendler ultimately offers a message of hope. Early in her stay in the hospital, she says, "My wish for myself is that one day I'll reach a place where I can face hardship without trying to destroy myself." By the end of the book, she fulfils that wish.©2024 Anna Marie Tendler (P)2024 Bonnier Books UK

Editorial Review

This is not a celebrity divorce exposé. It’s better.
Anna Marie Tendler’s memoir has been getting buzz since last spring, on account of her public split with a very famous ex as well as her own artistic renown. But guess what? The vibes have shifted, because early reviews confirm that a) the famous ex is but an unnamed blip in Tendler’s story, and b) the memoir is FANTASTIC. Men Have Called Her Crazy details the author’s stay at an inpatient psychiatric facility after her struggles with anxiety, depression and self-harm became impossible to manage. Her eye-opening honesty, humour and intelligent nuance in recounting both her experiences in recovery and the background that led her there – particularly her complicated history with men, which I suspect most women will find as powerfully relatable as I did – make for a captivating listen in Tendler’s own voice. Far more than tabloid fodder, it’s a deeply moving mental health memoir with staying power.— Kat J., Audible Editor

What an incredible book. The imagery and detail is haunting, poignant, and beautiful. I cannot recommend this book enough.

A beautiful, brutal and unflinching look at how trauma and misogyny leads to injury of the mind and spirit. Labels given to women over the centuries from ‘female hysteria’ to BPD allow society and particularly men to call us crazy. But we are not crazy, we are angry. Anna gives voice to the experiences of many and gives hope that healing is possible.

We aren’t crazy

I don’t know what I thought this book would be… part of me thinking it would be a juicy, tell all, hit piece on a public story that many speculated on. But Tendler uses this book to reclaim her own story of her mental health journey and the mental impact her relationships have had on her throughout her life. A fascinating exploration of feminism, self worth, romance, motherhood, consent and love that leads to the readers own self analysis. The passages surrounding her love for her dog were beautiful. While I found myself disagreeing with some of her ideas about the world I truly enjoyed discovering that there was far more to Tendler then I previously thought.

An unexpected, thought provoking journey

Beautifully written exposé on recovering from men. Heartbreaking and devastating but ultimately incredibly powerful and outstanding.

A well told personal story with carefully chosen words. Would recommend to memoir readers and those wanting to hear a not so unique experience told eloquently and with humour.
