amazing foray into the thrill and discoveries of manuscript studies. i didn't believe i could enjpy it without the pictures which accompany the printed version, but de Hamel's descriptions made them.come to life, and his enthusiasm for the subject made this an audible treat

From the superfluously tranquil narration to the fascinating stories of each manuscript featured here, I wholeheartedly loved every minute of it.

While we should welcome and encourage recordings of such works, de Hamel's cloying (and frequently unclear) voice is not pleasant; there are also several inept and jarring edits.

I liked to listen to this meandering through medieval manuscripts late in the evening to relax before bed. The book itself is fascinating, but not exactly exciting. But the author's knowledge and enthusiasm comes across well.
