Summary

He's empty, inhuman, dishonest, and cruel. She's never wanted anyone more. Sydney has lived in fear for eight years after freelance assassin, Merc, failed to rescue her from a cult-like militia group. Left in the hands of a sadistic man, she did whatever it took to survive. But Merc's last words gave her hope. Hope he'd be back to finish the job. After Merc is betrayed by her father, Sydney becomes his target. He wields sex, drugs, lies, and love like weapons. Merc knows just what to do with a fearful girl like Sydney. He's in control. He's always in control. But Sydney Channing is not what she appears. And Merc's only redeeming act - the very one that made Sydney's life a living hell - might just be his worst mistake yet. Warning: Meet Me in the Dark is a standalone non-traditional dark captive romantic suspense. It is not intended for sensitive listeners.

You’ll Need A Flashlight To Get Through This Dark

On the cover of this book, it says a dark suspense, and that's what it is and it's not an understatement! The story centers around Sydney and Merc, they first meet up when Sydney is seventeen, begging Merc to save her from bad guy boyfriend Garrett, but Merc is no hero and after roughing her up, he serves her up to Garrett on a silver platter, but he leaves an ominous message with her that he will be back, when she least expects it to finish her off.

Several years later, engaged to be married to a man named Brett, happiness is within her reach, but a feeling of dread overcomes her and she decides to run, unfortunately for her right into Merc’s clutches. Kidnapping her, Merc sets about breaking down Sydney and attempting to extract information from her about Garrett, who disappeared from her life without a trace years ago.

This book is a difficult listen and if you have triggers you’ll want to stay far away from this book, it’s a terrifying tale and there’s extreme violence, degradation, dubious consent, and explicit sexual content, this is more of a thriller/suspense novel but it does have romantic elements and an HEA, but you feel like you’ve been through war to get there!

The dual narration by Troy Duran and Anna Riordan was flawless, what they do really is acting and they both did a wonderful job. The audio production quality was first class and I look forward to listening to more from these narrators!

Where do I begin?

I teetered on whether or not to purchase this book for way longer than is necessary to give up a credit, but ultimately it now part of my library. The reviews intrigued and scared me at the same time, but the book itself messed with me far more. The theme of mind control and helplessness had me searching within myself for ways to press on. These characters are, pardon my language, fucked in the head...all of them. Each and every single one, whether they're prominent or background figures, they're fucked. But I say that with a smile because that's how we all are, hopefully not to their extremes. Just when you think you've completed the overall puzzle in the story, you realize that every event and every person is a piece that you never thought to put together. This review may only be somewhat helpful to you if you're as hesitant as I was, so I'll hush (wink wink) and state it plainly. Click the button, spend the credit, make the purchase. JA Huss always delivers, and she served the hell out of this one.

Hush

I would do anything this man said. As crazy and messed up as this tale is, I am in love with this couple and their journey. I thought it was so good and addictive that even with a sick child and a full work schedule I finished it in a day and a half. I could not stop listening. It has me guessing and wanting more the whole way. It had the perfect ending with the perfect narrators. Both of them delivered performances both powerful and raw that captured me from the beginning. I have had this and other audio’s of JA Huss for a while and for some reason have put them off. That is all about to change. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who likes a taboo romance with suspense. It is not an easy to figure out storyline but a warped one worth following.

Incredibly well written but

This book is so well done, but one thing bothered me. First I should say well worth the credit. The thing that bothered me was there is no way that girl wouldn't have multiple broken bones. The violence while part of this type of book was to the level where her bones would have broken. I couldn't believe it simply for that reason. Still, even with that it was well written and I would buy again. The performance was top notch

On The Edge Of My Chair From The Beginning

What made the experience of listening to Meet Me in the Dark the most enjoyable?

The tone and voice of the narrators bring the story to life. The storyline is very suspenseful and listening to it the suspense, anger, lust, and doubt the characters feel are heightened as the story progresses.

What other book might you compare Meet Me in the Dark to and why?

If I have to compare this book, it would be something by Sandra Brown. Her suspense is always a nail biter. Julie's books have more heat in them, so I'm not sure it is a fair to compare her works to other writers of romantic suspense.

Have you listened to any of Troy Duran and Anna Riordan ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the first time I've listened to anything with Anna Riordan. I heard Troy Duran in Ford where he did an excellent job. For me, these two narrators are what I expect Sydney and Merc to sound like when I read the book initially. They both do an excellent job, and I will look for their works in the future.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely. The story is captivating.

Performance Great, Story was ehhhh

Any additional comments?

I love JA Huss but this book for me was just alright. I can't really pin point what I didn't like about it because it wasn't that I didn't like it. I know that is a bit confusing. Is it worth a credit, yes because the performance was great.

Full of twists!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Definitely if they like books that make them think and question everything. What I loved about it was that you are slowly fed the information and that up to the end you are still unsure of who's side anyone is on. It's dark and suspenseful and fair warning, there are no heroes in this story.

What other book might you compare Meet Me in the Dark to and why?

JA Huss's books are hard to compare to others because her stories are so unique, but if I had to choose I would say 321. They are both very different but the same in that they have plenty of twists and turns.

What about Troy Duran and Anna Riordan ’s performance did you like?

Their narration was spot on, I felt like I was with Merc and Sydney watching everything unfold.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes it was! I needed to know how it was going to end.

Any additional comments?

There is so much I want to say but I do not want to spoil it for anyone. Just know if you decide to Meet Me in the Dark buckle up and enjoy the ride!
