Summary

Award-winning travel broadcaster Pete McCarthy tells of his hilarious journey around Ireland in search of the roots he always wanted to claim. McCarthy's Bar is the result of a lifelong love affair with Ireland. Written and read by the presenter of Channel 4's Travelog, it is both an entertaining journey and a personal investigation into a past, and a country populated by hundreds of McCarthys, where Christian Brothers rub shoulders with Van Morrison and Saint Patrick, and a perfect pint of Guiness is a joy that's always worth waiting for.

Critic reviews

"McCarthy mines a rich seam of humour as he finds himself on the receiving end of some warm but unsophisicated hospitality. But then, he could probably make a phone book funny." ( Independent on Sunday)

Much to abridged

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This was well written and well read but really bad value for money as much too heavily abridged

Would you be willing to try another book from Pete McCarthy? Why or why not?

Yes - I would like to try an unabridged one and hope in time that this one will be available in its unabridged format.

Loved it, but too abridged!

This is one of those books that almost made me laugh out loud on every page. They are rare, and this is amongst the best. Pete McCarthy left us far too soon, and had many more like this in him, had he lived.

The trouble with this abridged audio version is that it's too short. Many of my favourite pieces were missing, and at under 2 hours, the audio doesn't really do justice to McCarthy's lengthy sojourn to find his Irish soul.

It's still a great listen, and the additional voices add hugely to the fun, but what a shame Pete never did the whole thing for us to enjoy.

An Amazing Bourney.... Mind Blowing & Uber Funny

I really enjoyed this. Very funny and vibrant. Makes you want to take the first ferry or plane out to Ireland. :-)
