This book is not what you think it is.

I wanted a book about Mayan Mythology. I am very interested by this lost, mysterious culture. The title and illustration icon of the book, (along with the stellar reviews) convinced me to get it. A quarter of the way in, the book starts discussing the upcoming end of the world as predicted in 2012 by the Mayan calendar. Even saying that the National Geographic Society was providing survival tips? What?

Then comes the weird Christian angle. The author starts writing about the obvious signs of a global flood. Think Noah and his Ark. Could this flood have wiped away the Maya? Maybe, according to this book. "Hydraulic scarring" on the Great Sphinx are used as an example. Fair enough. There is not enough written about this fantastic culture that was wiped out as mysteriously as it began. We can point to the Spanish, their guns and germs but also inner socio-political factors that all could have contributed to the Mayan collapse. Who knows, right? We need more books on this subject. I'm happy this book at least tried. It's nuts though, so don't bother unless you're into nuts literature. In that case, enjoy!

Good information bad narrator

The information is good but the Narrator is awful. He never even took the time to learn how to pronounce the Mayan words and God names.
