When Allie Finkle turns 10 years old, her parents announce that they are moving her and her brothers from their suburban split-level into an ancient Victorian in town. Allie's not at all happy about having to give up her wall-to-wall carpeting for creaky floorboards and creepy secret passageways - not to mention leaving her modern, state-of-the-art suburban school for a rundown, old-fashioned school in the city, populated not, as her old school was, with popular suburban kids, but creative city types.

She accepted a scholarship to a mostly-white private school and even Saturday morning test prep opportunities. But some opportunities feel more demeaning than helpful. Story
All Amara wants for her birthday is to visit her father’s family in New York City - Harlem, to be exact. She can’t wait to finally meet her Grandpa Earl and cousins in person and to stay in the brownstone where her father grew up. Maybe this will help her understand her family - and herself - in new way. But New York City is not exactly what Amara thought it would be. It’s crowded, with confusing subways and suffocating sidewalks, and her father is too busy with work to spend time with her and too angry to spend time with Grandpa Earl.

Can't stand the narrator
I loved this series growing up and thought it would be nice to have the whole set on audio, but I just can't stand the narrator of the Mary Anne books. Too much giggling and an awful attempt at a southern accent. I'm not going to purchase any more of the Mary Anne books in the series.
