What do Christians hope for? To leave this wicked world and go to 'heaven'? For the 'kingdom of God' to grow gradually on earth? What do we mean by the 'resurrection of the body', and how does that fit with the popular image of sitting on clouds playing harps? And how does all this affect the way we live in the here and now? Tom Wright, one of our leading theologians, addresses these questions in this provocative and wide-ranging new book.

Story
At a distance of 20 centuries, the figure of Jesus of Nazareth can seem impossibly obscure - indeed, some skeptics even question whether he existed. And yet we have an eyewitness account of his life, death, and resurrection from one of his closest companions, the sherman Simon Bar-Jonah, better known as the Apostle Peter. Peter's disciple Mark wrote down the apostle's account of the life of Jesus as he told it to the first Christians in Rome. The vivid, detailed, unadorned prose of the Gospel of Mark conveys the unmistakable immediacy of a firsthand account.

What are we supposed to think about the coronavirus crisis? Some people think they know: ‘This is a sign of the End,’ they say. ‘It’s all predicted in the book of Revelation.’ Others disagree but are equally clear: ‘This is a call to repent. God is judging the world and through this disease he’s telling us to change.’ Some join in the chorus of blame and condemnation: ‘It’s the fault of the Chinese, the government, the World Health Organisation...’ Tom Wright examines these reactions to the virus and finds them wanting.

Then Wright attempts a short systematic account of the main theological contours of Paul's thought and its pertinence for the church today.

Story
We find in the pages of Scripture that the stories found there often mirror our own stories, and that we too need the very thing we do not deserve: the grace of God.From the beginning, the church has had an uneasy relationship with grace. The gravitational pull is always toward graceless religion. The odd thing is that when you read the New Testament, the only thing Jesus stood against consistently was graceless religion.

Story
Eugene H. Peterson considers all the ways that Jesus is the Way compared to the distorted ways the modern American church has chosen to follow. Arguing that the way Jesus leads and the way we follow are symbiotic, Peterson begins with an extensive study of how the ways of those who came before Christ - Abraham, Moses, David, Elijah, Isaiah of Jerusalem, and Isaiah of the Exile - revealed and prepared the "way of the Lord" that became complete in Jesus.

Summary
Tom Wright's eye-opening comments on the gospel and what it might mean for us are combined, passage by passage, with his own fresh and involving translation. Making use of his true scholar's understanding, yet writing in an approachable and anecdotal style, Wright captures the urgency and excitement of Mark's gospel in a way few writers have.
Tom Wright has completed a tremendous task: to provide comprehensive guides to all the books of the New Testament and to furnish them with his own fresh translation of the entire text. Each short passage is followed by a highly listenable commentary with helpful background information. The format makes it appropriate also for daily study.
About the author: Tom Wright is research professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of St Andrews. His recent books include Surprised by Scripture, Simply Good News, Paul and the Faithfulness of God, Paul and His Recent Interpreters, The Paul Debate, God in Public, Advent for Everyone: A Journey Through Matthew and The Day the Revolution Began.

I love Bishop Wright
I am a fan of Bishop Wright, and especially his series of "for everyone" books. He uses the name "N.T. Wright" when he writes "scholarly" books, and he uses the name "Tom Wright" when he writes his "for everyone" books. He breaks up the book of the New Testament, here the Gospel of Mark, into short pieces that make a logical portion for his purposes. He then gives his own translation of that short portion. I like having Bishop Wright's own translation, instead of a standard translation such as KJV or RSV, because he will often explain why he used a particular word or phrase in his translation. After the portion of the Gospel, then he gives a short reflection on it. I find his reflections inspirational because they inspire me to think about God's word in new ways. They cause me to think about whether I am listening to Jesus' words and whether I am living my life in a way that is consistent with his words.
I am using the audiobook this year (2021) as a lenten discipline, listening to one or two portions at bedtime. I hope the entire "for everyone" series will be recorded as audiobooks.
The narrator is fine. I find him to be just a little too emphatic. I am sure that his intent is to make the readings and the reflections exciting, but I think he tries just a little too hard. I am still in the first third of the book, so it may be that his narration will improve as he gets into a rhythm.
