Summary

This is the second edition of the best-selling Marching With Caesar-Conquest of Gaul.

Marching With Caesar-Conquest of Gaul is a first-person narrative, written in the form of a memoir as dictated to a scribe of Titus Pullus, Legionary, Optio and First Spear Centurion of Caesar's 6th and 10th Legion. The memoir is written three years after his retirement as Camp Prefect, when Titus is 61 years old.

Titus, along with his boyhood friend Vibius Domitius, joins the 10th Legion in the draft of 61 BC, when Gaius Julius Caesar is the governor of Spain. Titus and Vibius are assigned to a tent group, with seven other men who will become their closest friends during their times in the legion. Titus, Vibius and their comrades endure the harsh training regimen that made the legions the most feared military force in the ancient world. The 10th Legion is blooded in a series of actions in Spain, led by Caesar in a campaign that was the true beginning of one of the most brilliant military careers in history. This part of the story is now available in Marching With Caesar-Birth of the 10th Legion.

Three years after joining the legions, the 10th is called on again, this time to be part of the subjugation of Gaul, one of the greatest feats of arms in any period of history. During the subsequent campaigns, the 10th cements its reputation as Caesar's most favored and trusted legion, and is involved in most of the major actions during this period.

This second book of a completed series closes with Caesar crossing the Rubicon, and the 10th preparing to march to war, this time against fellow Romans.

Critical praise for Marching With Caesar-Conquest of Gaul:

"Fans of Roman historical fiction- or military fiction just in general- shouldn't miss what looks to be one heck of a series." (The Historical Novel Society)

I sure hope part 3 is forthcoming! I didn’t think I would enjoy a history book like this, but I was wrong, I loved it.

WONDERFUL!!!!

I can't express how much I enjoyed this book. my only complaint is the rest of the series is not available on audible. I guess I'm going to have to go back to doing it the old fashioned way lol.

Excellent and informative

I hoped for a second novel and this does not disappoint me at all. The viewpoint is that of a Roman soldier rising up the ranks as Caesar develops his most persuasive claim to fame. Peake is a militarist by his own bio and he attacks his subject as only a soldier would. I want to listen to the Commentaries again to get Caesars own view but Peake makes these very amazing stories into something more appealing than even the great hero achieved. It is no wonder that Caesar’s campaigns are taught still in military colleges and so they should be so treated, because they exemplify the best tactical and strategic approach to invading a hostile and unwelcoming land. But as a glimpse into Caesars military genius and profoundly unsuccessful political mindset they really stand alone - except for Colleen McCulloughs sometimes fawning treatment - as the best current depiction of what can be so right but so wrong in this history lesson.
I truly wish current demagogues who sincerely have a lofty aim would study and learn.

Thoroughly enjoyed it

I started with the first book to listen while commuting. I got hooked and continued with this one. I found myself listening even when not on the road or eager to get driving. The books are well rounded with historical facts, details, and the character's personal adventures. Simon Burdett does a fine job or narrating. I can't wait until book 3 becomes available on Audible.

Can’t wait for the next one

Absolutely love the storyline, narration, and vocabulary used in the book. Only thing I dislike is having to wait for the next one.
