Summary

Exclusively from Audible

When the self-effacing 10-year-old Fanny Price is sent to live with her wealthy relations at Mansfield Park she seems shy and withdrawn beside her witty and vivacious cousins. Growing up in the Bertram household, she is always treated as an inferior, only finding an ally in her cousin Edmund. But Fanny's steadfast and purposeful character eventually makes her an indispensable part of the household. During the absence of Fanny's uncle, the others become entangled in a maze of flirtation and intrigue upon the arrival of Mary Crawford and her brother Henry. It is only Fanny whose deep but secret love for Edmund remains true despite his fascination with her brilliant but frivolous cousin Mary.

The most serious of Austen's works due to its discussion of religion and religious duty, Mansfield Park also offers a subtle examination of social position and moral integrity, making it one of Austen's most profound works.

Jane Austen was an English novelist known primarily for her six major novels which focused on the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Her plots often explore women's dependence on marriage in the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security.

Critic reviews

"Frances Barber offers a sterling performance, bringing life and sparkle to each character....Barber convincingly shifts from lord of the manor to sniveling servitude at the change of a sentence. And her narrative passages transparently tie the whole family together into one beautiful package." (AudioFile)

Almost boring.

I love Austen but this is a real slow burner with what feels like a nipped off ending. My least favourite of her novels.

Excellent, though not quite the best of Austen

Excellent, though not quite the best of Austen. A very good narrator. It's so great to have this title included in my subscription.

Enjoyable

I adore Jane Austen, however this is not one of my favourites. Fanny is no Elizabeth or Emma! The ending felt a little rushed. But as always, beautiful prose and wonderful storytelling. You feel you live the story alongside her. The narration was fine, it didn’t bother me as it did others.

Excellent performance

This performance is really excellent. I love the variety in the voices, and Barber's voice just seems to fit so naturally to the elegant style of the writing. I had previously tried to read a physical copy of this book, and given up, so I am pleased that this has let me access this very interesting, controversial novel.

A great performance of an interesting story

I came to Mansfield Park as a fan of Pride and Prejudice, and Sense and Sensibility, and honestly I can see why Mansfield Park is less popular. The story has some slowness and patches unnecessary detail, and the protagonist is less dynamic than other Austin heroines.

However, the range of characters is great as ever, including several individuals that I loved to hate. The vocal performance was fab at getting across the subtext in speech, and on the whole it was a lovely listen with some genuinely surprising twists in the story. Can recommend.

rushed delivery

This felt like the reader was rushing all the time, eager to get to the end. slowing the speed didn't help. Perhaps it was a combination of the writer's style and the readers. not my favourite Jane Austen - but of course you may disagree!

Worth a go

I have no idea why the narration on this gets such bad feedback, Barber does a really good job: she captures the essence of each character and sets the tone and visualisation of each chapter really well. Yes, Mrs Norris has a grating voice, but she is meant to be a grating character! If you're in doubt because of the negative reviews, give it a go and decide for yourself, Audible have a good 'returns' policy anyway.

Unrelated to the narration, this is probably my least favourite Austen because the story pacing is just not up to her usual standard (it's quite a slow, intense build and then the ending feels rushed) and Fanny is a frustrating protagonist, but it's still worth a read/listen to.

Less vexing

I love this story, I could read it again and again.

I find it funny, for example, she held her salts close as she anticipated the stress that might occur

I've always loved Mansfield Park but the narrator made it even better. A very pleasant listen!
