About this listen

An untold RAF Spitfire pilot’s memoir of WWII: from crash-landing on Linosa and capture, to Stalag Luft III, the Great Escape camp, and the brutal 1945 Death March. Ken Cam’s first-hand account is warm, unsentimental and unforgettable.

“Make it do,” his mother said. And somehow, he always did.

What if you were flying into war with barely three weeks of training? What if your first dogfight ended with your guns still on safety? What if a single wrong turn landed you in a prison camp halfway across Europe, unsure if you'd ever see home again?

This is the extraordinary true story of Ken Cam, a young RAF Spitfire pilot hurled into the chaos of World War II far from ready—but never backing down.

From that uncertain beginning, Make It Do follows Ken’s astonishing wartime journey:

  • Flying solo combat missions over France and North Africa
  • Crash-landing on the remote island of Linosa
  • Captured and transported by submarine to Europe
  • Imprisoned in the POW camp later made famous by The Great Escape
  • Surviving the Death March of 1945, walking for days through snow
  • Finally seeing the British flag again—starved, freezing, alive

Through it all, one phrase guided him: the quiet, stoic wartime mantra passed down by his mother—“Make it do.”

This is a never-before-published true story, written 25 years ago by Ken himself—and now released to the public for the first time. Told with warmth, humour, and humility, this is a rare firsthand account of WWII seen through the eyes of a man who lived it—and never sought praise for surviving it.

What began as a private gift to his children has evolved into something greater: a profoundly human story of quiet heroism, endurance, and love for family. It captures not only what happened during the war, but also how it shaped a life after.

Order Make It Do today and listen to one of the last untold stories of the Second World War—while you still can.

What a great listen! This is a truly heroic account of one man’s experiences as a Spitfire pilot during the Second World War. Told in the first person with genuine humility, Ken Cam’s story is both punchy and fascinating from start to finish.
Joe Mills’ narration is spot on, his natural accent, tone, and delivery totally captures the spirit of the tale. It sounds authentic and perfectly matched to the material.
A gripping and inspiring listen. Highly recommended.

What a story and what a man. The quiet humility despite being and absolute hero is so refreshing! The narrator knocked the delivery out the park too! Highly recommended.

I spotted this title on Amazon & after reading the introduction, I knew it was book, I had to have. Luckily it was available as an Audible book, so I ordered it immediately & what an awesome book it was as it accompanied me on my daily walks.

If you’re like me & enjoy the stories of the RAF during WW2 then this is a title you must have. This book follows the author through his early life before he joins the RAF & how he starts military life square bashing before he begins his training on different aircraft types.

There is so much content here in the story & the narration is really excellent as well. I won’t say anymore other than highly recommended this to you. It’s one of those books that you will read more than once.. 5*

One of the best books in my Audible collection
