Story
Smart men never dabble with demons. I never claimed to be smart, but at least, I’m powerful enough to control them. When I bound Havoc to me nearly 300 years ago, I never realized how difficult he’d make my life, although “accidentally” lighting him on fire every now and then does bring a smile to my face. Havoc is handsome, mysterious, and somehow, my closest companion, even if we don’t always get along.

Being a hit man has its perks, but I never thought getting an accidental mooning by an attractive PI while he’s caught on a fence would be one of them. While it’s not exactly love at first sight, he’s captured my interest and won’t let go. Suddenly, I find myself caught in a game of cat and mouse, determined to attract the attention of Jackson, the PI who should be my enemy. He pretends like he’s not flattered by my flowers and the mentions of my totally-not-fictitious blow-up doll, Randy (or was it Dandy?), but I know better.

A psychic without an anchor. A student in trouble. A shooter on the loose. I’m Jonathan Bane, a licensed psychic who consults for the police. I routinely help the police put the bad guys away and, for that reason, the criminal world doesn’t like me much. My psychic ability prevents me from handling anything electronic - and I do mean anything, I fry it in seconds - so calling for help isn’t always a possibility. I need an anchor, a partner, but I’m resigned: It’s just wishful thinking. At least, I thought so until he walked through the door.

Summary
A gay high-society wedding. A stolen book of spells. A love-threatening lie.
Can a witch avoid a murder rap without revealing the supernatural truth? Cosmo Saville guiltily hides a paranormal secret from his soon-to-be husband. And if he can’t undo a powerful love spell, uncertainty threatens his nuptial magic. But when he’s arrested for allegedly killing a longtime rival, he could spend his honeymoon behind bars.
Police Commissioner John Joseph Galbraith never believed in love until Cosmo came along. Falling head over heels for the elegant antiques dealer is an enchantment he never wants to break. So, when all fingers point to Cosmo’s guilt, John races to prove his fiancée’s innocence before they take their vows.
As Cosmo searches for the real killer among the arcane aristocracy, John warns him to leave it to the police. But with an unseen enemy threatening to expose Cosmo’s true nature, the couple’s blissful future could shatter like a broken charm. Can Cosmo find the lost grimoire, clear his name, and keep John’s love alive, or will black magic “rune” their wedding bells?
Mainly by Moonlight is the first book in the sexy Bedknobs and Broomsticks romantic gay mystery series. If you like spellbinding suspense, steamy star-crossed fun, and a dash of paranormal, then you’ll love Josh Lanyon’s charming tale.

This book is a mess.
I cannot fault the narrator, who did a great job with a terribly confused and undeveloped story. I rolled my eyes at the ridiculousness of this couple meeting, falling in love, getting engaged, arranging a wedding AND finding and purchasing a HOUSE all in the space of TWO WEEKS!! which was later excused with 'magic'...pull the other one!
Josh Lanyon's recent output has been ill thought out, rushed and under developed. This runs along the same lines.
unimpressed.

Thrilling Story!!! Kale Williams is Spectacular
Holy Smokes - what a spectacular story! The characters are fantastic for sure, but this storyline is amazing. I'm all a-shiver with the possibilities of where Josh is going to go with this one and I can not wait to read I Burried a Witch!
Fantastic in audio, Kale Williams' portrayal of Cosmo is perfection - he totally nails this one. Williams captures Cosmo's sweetness and his charm, how he opens his heart to John, his friends, and everyone he meets... what a wonderful character.
I enjoyed every moment of Mainly by Moonlight... the romance between John and Cosmo (when he finds out about the love spell I got so choked up I almost cried). The secrets John's keeping (and I'm sure he's got a ton up his sleeve), the sister Jinx and the witches who show up at the end, and I love how this story rolls into the next episode.
Wonderful!

I love you and only you
OMG! 😱 OMG! 😱 OMG! 😱 Where do I even begin with this book? First of all, since the moment Josh Lanyon announced about this book and from that blurb, I knew this is soooooo going to be my cuppa. 😍 So I was waiting really impatiently about the release of this book. 😅 But when Josh again announced that the audio is coming very soon after the release of the print, I knew I gotta wait again because I love Josh’s audios even more than I love Josh’s books. ❤️ And boy, was the wait worth it! Yes!!! Yes, it does!!! 🥰 It was EVERYTHING!!! 💜 OMG! I can’t even begin to explain how much I loved Cosmo and John.
Cosmos is a young, fun witch who’s hopelessly in love with his soon to be husband John. And to say Cosmo was at the wrong place at the wrong time would be understatement of the century. He is marrying the police commissioner of San Francisco in 2 days. And now, he’s caught red handed at the place of the murder of his rival at midnight by two police officers who remembered him as the fiancé of their own police commissioner. And to make the matters worse, Cosmo’s family treasure, a very important grimoire which is the reason why he was at the place of the murder in the first place, has gone missing. And if you think misfortune comes alone, Cosmo also found out that his fiancé is actually under a love spell while trying to investigate the murder which he is the sole suspect of. The wedding is in two days and Cosmo isn’t sure whether he’ll end up at the alter or in the jail when it happens. Most importantly, does John really love him with true love or is he merely bewitched under love spell? A murder mystery, a tempestuous romance and a lost grimoire .. Cosmo sure has his hands full.
Again, OMG! 😱 I loooooooooooved this audio sooooooo soooooooo much. 😍 True to Josh’s usual mysteries, I had no idea who was the villain until the very end. Like, completely clueless about who could be the murderer. 😳😅 And that’s what’s so great about Josh Lanyon’s books, full of suspense and thrill and always keeps me at the edge of my seat for the whole book. Considering Josh is a bit stingy with heat in her books, boy, this book was smoking scorching hot!!! 🔥🔥🔥 Granted, there aren’t a lot of heated scenes in the book since the romance between John and Cosmos was really slow burn and sensual and build up until the very climax. But what we get, Josh delivered! 👏 Beautiful, sensual, raw and extremely erotic! 🔥💜 I loved every second of lovely intimate moments between John and Cosmo. 🥰 I love Cosmos character so sooo much. ❤️ Probably, my favorite Josh Lanyon character so far and yes, that’s saying a lot and that’s how much I loved him. 😍 And my, Kale Williams did a terrific, terrific job narrating this story. 👏 I have always loved his narration and performance but boy, every time he speaks French and Latin, I melt a little bit inside and become jelly while listening! 😂 You really don’t need to understand French to know they are extremely sexy! 😉😏 I cant even count the ways this book appeals to me. The nerd in me also loved all about Wicca, Witchcraft and the spells. They were so cool! 😎 And the ending, OMG! 😱 That ending! Couldn’t ask for a better ending. 😍 That’s for sure. I unashamedly listen that ending like 3 times. 😁😅 *sigh* I am so drunk on this ahmazing listen 😌 and I already can’t freaking wait for next book in the series! And yes, I need me more Cosmos and John in my life. 🥰💜😉

Warning: Unresolved Story
Just to let you know, not much was resolved in this book. We barely get to know the two main leads at all. Pretty much everyone the main character , Cosmo, knows is a possible suspect at the end still, and Cosmo is still under suspicion. The book description made me think that at some point in the book Cosmo would actually confide in his husband, but no. It's every bit as dissatisfying as the tv show Bewitched, which the book references many a time.
Overall, I loved the feel of the witchy stuff, though there were a lot of dorky cliche spells etc. This has the very intrigueing makings of a fun series, but it made me feel frustrated and angry that so little was resolved or actually happened in this first book and it feels like a really unsubtle attempt to break a story into multiple books in order to profit more from the sales, although maybe I'm just bitter and cynical.
This is a very nice series so far and I may read the next installments, but be warned that this first book is incomplete and unsatisfying in many regards, and you probably shouldn't even start on it until the 2nd book is ready to purchase and listen to immediately after words. I imagine I'll have to wait at least a year before I can purchase the 2nd book and by then I will have lost interest in the plot.

MMy Thoughts and Review:
This was my first read/ listen by Lanyon and with the "witchy" premise seemed fitting for the season. I assumed going into it that it would be a light rom/com and part of me wonders with all the references to the TV series "Bewitched," if that hadn't been the goal? Maybe? I'm not sure.
Cosmo, MC#1, is a non-practicing, even if a "nose-twitching" from time to time, witch. He has found himself in a pickle by stumbling on the dead body of a competitor.
MC#2, John, is Cosmo's whirlwind romance fiance and also the police commissioner. John has no idea Cosmo is a witch, or that there is even an actual supernatural species. He does however believe evil exists and everything doing with the occult fits neatly in to that box.
Even though this was a full length novel, it reads almost like a novella. The reader is inundated with so many different characters without a lot of depth to them, that they kept getting jumbled and mixed up.
It felt as if through all the character intros, the moving houses of the MCs and the Kinda sorta vow exchange nothing really happened in the story other than Cosmo lying to John over and over, John throwing down a gauntlet about them being over if Cosmo ever attempted to manipulate him, and John expecting Cosmo to jump when he called but him being gone when things like moving or wedding prep was needed. **sigh...
I am an absolute sucker for series and character arcs, so I am hoping that book two will explain things a bit more. I am sure I will read it at some point, once it comes out. Probably...🔮
The Narration was excellent and helped breathe life into this story! 💗

Kale is a great performer/narrator and really compliments Lanyon's work easily going from wholesome to snarky and gruff while never missing a beat.

Save me from this 'love story'
TL/DR: Cosmo is a unrepentant liar and inexcusably selfish, especially at the end. John is not only so wildly controlling it hurts to read but he knowingly physically hurts Cosmo. And if you came here for the mystery, I have bad news for you on that front as well. The nicest thing I can say is the narrator was unobjectionable. Oh, and the magic system isnt terrible.
This book popped up on my recommended list after I had listened to a few paranormal romances and thought it sounded like a fun and contemporary murder mystery. What I got instead was some of the worst main characters I have read in this genre.
I wont get into Cosmos selfish behavior because a lot of it happens towards the end, but he really doesn't care about his supposed friends, only his wedding and his honeymoon. So lets start off with the fact that our MC is lying through his teeth to the man he supposedly loves more than life itself. Maybe if he would have seemed even a little ashamed by that fact, you could forgive him, but he really isn't. We find out right away that John has been put under a love spell, so I was all prepared to like him more because of this, but then you meet John. He demands everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, be his way. He is pressuring Cosmo to do things in bed that Cosmo has made clear he doesn't want to do until they are married. He restrains Cosmo, and wont stop even when Cosmo tells him it hurts. He sucks. I cannot think of one good thing to say about him. Oh, and they are getting married after knowing each other for two weeks. Come. On.
Story wise- you will be left with no answers and a ton of loose ends, Im not even sure there was really a mystery component to this, its mostly just the set up to another story.

Not the best
I did not realize that I was reading aHallmark movie script. The “mystery “ in this novel took 2nd place to planning a wedding. Kale Williams was the only reason to keep listening to this thin story.

Another good narration!
For me Josh L books were either hit or miss... this was such a miss! The MCs were nice but the mystery not so much satisfying. For the MCs I would go for the next book but have low expectations on it being a mystery or thriller !!

I had issues with this story
I don’t know about this book you guys….
Well, not so much the book as the main characters, I think. They kind of coloured everything else, so I’m having a hard time separating the two. Maybe things will become clearer as I put words and thoughts on paper – it wouldn’t be the first time.
Cosmo Saville is happy, he’s two weeks away from marrying the man he loves. Only problem is, one of his business rivals turns up murdered and the police, fiancé John not included, is looking to him as a culprit. Needless to say they need to find the actual killer and fast. Oh, and preferably without spilling the whole paranormal world to John – a world he knows nothing about. Though personally I have to wonder about that, some of his actions just don’t quite add up. But I guess that will be explored later on in the series. Then there was the stolen grimoire, the apprentice that appeared out of nowhere, some family drama, relationship drama and a bunch of other stuff I’ve completely forgotten about. The premise of this book was well, confusing. I still can’t really say how it was all connected. It felt more like a cascade of different storylines thrown together in the disguise of a complete story.
I had a lot of issues with this book and a lot of it is related to our main couple. There is insta-love between John and Cosmo, but we are not part of that. We jump in two weeks after they first met – when they are in the midst of planning their wedding taking place two weeks later! Not feeling the love here. And the whole love spell thing just made it all feel even more iffy.
Then again, many things with their relationship was iffy to me. More than. For example, here you have two men, supposedly madly in love and weeks away from pledging their life to one another. So why all the secrets? Why wasn’t Cos honest with John about this powers, about the paranormal world? It’s one thing that’s he has forgone the craft to live life as a mortal, but shouldn’t he tell John anyway? Also, for someone wanting to stay clear of the paranormal, Cos sure does end up in the middle of it time and again – and thinking of taking on a witch apprentice? How in the world does that add up? Yeah… see logic is not a friend in this book.
However, my main issue is still the relationship between Cos and John. There were just too many secrets on both sides. Too many things that just didn’t sit well with me. It was also borderline abusive, and it just made me cringe. It wasn’t romantic in anyway. So many times I just wanted to yell at Cos to just run. Cos was fighting for scraps of John’s approval and attention and the way that John just dismissed him and treated him in general raised some serious red flags for me. They were not equals, the power dynamics were so off balance they weren’t in the same hemisphere.
Kale Williams is climbing up towards being one of my go to narrators. I’m really enjoying his narration – with the exception of his pronunciation of athame, it was jarring to and kind of threw me out of the story (not that I was all that invested in the first place). So while the narration itself was great, not even Williams could make me believe. That being said, he definitely kept me from DNFin this book, which sadly was a real possibility from early on. He has a very nice voice to listen to and he made my (long) train ride home more bearable.
While I’m a huge fan of both Josh Lanyon and Kale Williams I don’t think I’m going to pick up more books in this series, they’re just not for me.
