Summary

Once again, Anthony Horowitz proves to be a captivating storyteller in this mysterious crime caper with an old-school twist. Crafting a narrative that is fuller and more intimate at second glance, there is much more than meets the eye.

When editor Susan Ryeland is given the tattered manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has little idea it will change her life. She's worked with the revered crime writer for years, and his detective, Atticus Pund, is renowned for solving crimes in the sleepy English villages of the 1950s.

As Susan knows only too well, vintage crime sells handsomely. It's just a shame that it means dealing with an author like Alan Conway....

But Conway's latest tale of murder at Pye Hall is not quite what it seems. Yes, there are dead bodies and a host of intriguing suspects, but hidden in the pages of the manuscript there lies another story: a tale written between the very words on the page, telling of real-life jealousy, greed, ruthless ambition and murder.

From Sunday Times best seller Anthony Horowitz comes Magpie Murders, his deliciously dark take on the vintage crime novel, brought bang up to date with a fiendish modern twist.

Read by Samantha Bond and Allan Corduner.

Surprisingly original with its traditional premise

Really enjoyed this, both respectful and playful with the traditional whodunit, excellent reading, surprising and entertaining, recommended, most highly.

Absolutely innovative and intriguing listening

Listening to a murder mystery about a murder mystery was as intriguing as listening to a book about a book. A total reinvention of classic Agatha Christie type tale revamped for the modern reader. Is it guessable? One of the mysteries is, but the other solved by fictional PI Atticus Pund was definitely more of a mind bender. It leaves you analysing clues in the same way the narrator tries to do.

Well read and written by the literary genius that is Anthony Horowitz.

Pleasant comfy start with a nice structural twist.

Nice comfortable start that moves along at a reasonable pace ( very Agatha Christie) then half way along, we drop through to the real world where the manuscript itself becomes the main victim. The switch to a second reader works well. All in all a 4 star read. I'll go and look for another Anthony Horowitz novel.

Love This Golden & Modern Tale

What made the experience of listening to Magpie Murders the most enjoyable?

This was my first Audible and I absolutely loved it! I won't summarize as it's been done in other reviews better than I could, but if you love Poirot you'll love this. Double fun with the modern day parallel tale that runs along side it. I couldn't have picked a better first Audible experience. Samantha Bond and Allan Corduner - both wonderful narrators.

Disappointing...

An over-complicated, unnecessarily wordy, clunky who-dunnit. My first experience of Anthony Horowitz which will almost certainly be my last! I love Samantha Bond’s very distinctive voice however. Allan Corduner less so.

Enjoyable intertwining stories

Intriguing detective stories. However overlong, could have been edited a bit better but marvellous narrators.

Self-conscious

I couldn't get into it after the first part. The second part featuring the editor seemed contrived and unnecessary. I couldn't finish the book :(

So clever

It’s a brilliant story from a hugely talented writer. I enjoyed every minute of it - the narration is superb. Why settle for one whodunnit when you can have more? The way the stories are woven together left me in awe of Anthony Horowitz’s writing skills and simultaneously left me massively jealous of his creative mind.
