Summary

Here starts an adventure that will span lifetimes and worlds. Discover where the story begins. Raymond E. Feist is an internationally best-selling author. My name is Pug. I was once an orphaned kitchen boy, with no family and no prospects, but I am destined to become a master magician….

War is coming to the Kingdom of the Isles from another world, bringing with it chaos and destruction. Pug yearns to train as a warrior and fight for his kingdom alongside his foster-brother, Tomas, but instead he is forced to follow a different path: a path that will lead him right into the heart of the enemy. And one that will change the course of the war - and two worlds - forever. So begins the most epic series in fantasy fiction, a tale that will cross worlds and generations. Magician is the first book in the Riftwar Saga. The trilogy continues with book two, Silverthorn.

Great story, not so much the narrator

I would like to mention that I'm from the US and I wanted to know if the UK narrator was any better than the US one. This book isn't on audible in the US yet and even if it was I wasn't sure about buying it because the narrator that the US usually gets is John Meagher and his voice just doesn't fit Magician or any of Feists books for that matter. Peter Joyce in some ways was a step up from John. John sounds like a teenager and can't seem to throw his voice completely away from that. Also even though the writer is from the US it just seems like a story that warrants someone from the UK to narrate it. Where Peter Joyce fails is his various mispronunciations and voice choice. As other reviewers mentioned, Arutha is not pronounced "Aruta", as he seems to pronounce anything with a "th" in it as just a "t" which was particularly annoying. Other reviewers have also mentioned the annoying tendency to leave random long pauses between statements that don't merit the pause, and I confirm this. The long pauses are as much a sign or poor editing in the audio as they are faults of the narrator. Lastly, the voices were done somewhat weird, though they aren't as atrocious as Roy Dotrice in the Song of Ice and Fire series. For some reason Father Tully has a light Scottish accent instead of just an elderly voice. Despite all this Magician is a great story and it was great to get to listen to it and catch little things I didn't with an actual read.

Loved reading and hearing this.

This was the story that first brought the world of Midkemia and Raymond Feist to my attention. It thrilled me then and the audiobook was no exception. The adventures of Pug and friends still draw me and captivate my imagination.

Peter Joyce carried the story forward beautifully and I cannot recommend this too much. I had ordered ‘Silverthorn’ quickly after finishing this to continue the experience and I can see a lot more of this writers work in my future.

Highly highly recommend if you like this genre.

An old friend

This is my favourite book. I have read it multiple times from when I was a child.
I joined Audible in the strength of Magician being available. I was not disappointed.
It was like reconnecting with an old friend.
A brilliant story and narration makes for a 5star Audiobook experience.
Highly recommend!

Complete trilogy of Pug and his life

Overall the story was very good, telling how Pug was selected for an apprentice magician, finding himself not able to sustain what he was taught. Then being captured by an alien people to him. Being found to be a magic user, and his training which bought forth his hidden depth of magic.
Really well narrated. Putting the listener in a position of being their behind Pug as he comes to fruition.o
