A rich and vivid history of Britain's second city through the people who made it

‘What Manchester thinks today, England thinks tomorrow.’

Long before Manchester gave the world titans of industry, comedy, music and sport, it was the cosmopolitan Roman fort of Mamucium. But it was as the ‘shock city’ of the Industrial Revolution that Manchester really made its mark on the world stage. A place built on hard work and innovation, it is no coincidence that the digital age began here too, with the world’s first stored-program computer, Baby.

A city as radical as it is revolutionary, Manchester has always been a political hotbed. The Peterloo Massacre is immortalised in British folklore and the city was a centre for pioneering movements such as Chartism. Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst hailed from here and the city still treasures its wilful independence.

Manchester’s spirited individuality has carried through into its artistic output too, bringing the world Anthony Burgess, L.S. Lowry, Jeanette Winterson, Joy Division and Oasis. Mention United or City almost anywhere and you’ll find fans, and opinions.

Until now, this magnificent city did not have its definitive history. From the author of the bestselling Northerners, this work of unrivalled authority and breadth tells the story of a changing place and its remarkable people.

Fascinating

I found the content of this book very interesting and informative, well researched, detailed and thorough. Sadly, what I didn’t enjoy was the multitude of pronunciation errors on the part of the narrator. I appreciate you chose someone with an authentic regional accent. To be honest, I don’t think that was necessary but I can see why you did it. But surely there are many educated people from Manchester who could’ve read the book without mispronouncing so many words. May I suggest Professor Brian Cox for a future edition? The educated Manchester accent would’ve done this book much better justice.

An unfortunate choice of narrator!

As someone who grew up in what is now Greater Manchester I found this book interesting and informative, though it does have a tendency at the end of a chapter to descend into lists. The reader annoyed me by frequently mispronouncing not only local place names but often fairly common words.

This reads like the collated research for a book that the author never got around to writing. It is a chronological history with too little contemporaneous commentary on any of the events described. I knew a significant amount of the content already so perhaps I am not the intended audience, but the absence of regional or national context and/or narrative thrust, made it a dull and plodding listen (i don’t think the narrator I listened to on Audible helped wither). Eventually I gave
