Summary

In Madame Bovary, one of the great novels of 19th-century France, Flaubert draws a deeply felt and sympathetic portrait of a woman who, having married a country doctor and found herself unhappy with a rural, genteel existence, longs for love and excitement. However, her aspirations and her desires to escape only bring her further disappointment and eventually lead to unexpected, painful consequences. Flaubert’s critical portrait of bourgeois provincial life remains as powerful as ever.

Not my favourite read

Superbly narrated as always by Juliet Stevenson but I found the storyline rather dull and difficult to follow in places. Nevertheless I persevered until the rather sad ending.

Well read

Juliet Stephenson does a fabulous job of reading this classic. However even her great performance can’t save this story. Emma Bovary is spoilt, childish and generally annoying. She is greedy and could well be literatures first shopoholic! I couldn’t feel any sympathy for her so this marred my enjoyment somewhat.

A timeless piece

I have read and listened to Madame Bovary many times over the years and I still love it just as much as I did the first time. It is read so well by Juliette Stevenson that brings the characters to life and hits the tone always right. The story itself is just timeless. Although Emma is not a traditional protagonist, she is a reflection of anyone who has ever felt alone, felt the need for attention, the need to spend money to feel better, the need to feel wanted. She makes errors, mistakes and those who take advantage along the way. There are no winners in this book, no real triumphs but a reflection, a journey of human nature in the backdrop of a bourgeois lifestyle.

A timeless story told beautifully

I have long wanted to reread Madame Bovary and finally decided to try it on audible. It’s absolutely wonderful. I love the various voices and the overall tone is spot on. A real treat and highly recommended. Juliet Stevenson never disappoints.
